Playing as an origin (including Dark Urge) Is better for a subsequent playthrough.
All the origin characters have their own agenda/quest line. Custom characters do not, but will assist their allies with those quests for the ones you care to associate with and help.
Either way, the game is a lot of fun. This is a small choice in the grand scheme, and only a major concern if you plan to only play through one time.
Now that I tried a bard in single player, it's ridiculous how many bard-only interactions the game has compared to other classes. It really makes me think the devs intended you run a bard.
That and there seems to be a disproportionately high amount of bard gear lying around despite there being no bard companion.
I think this is actually a bug. You can take a performance feat, but the performance conversation options are locked by class in spite of this --- even if you are talking to people with your gith and cha astral wisdom, performance options stay hidden.
As for gear, I must be missing something. Ive found a few pieces but the bulk of it was not very good in act 1 & 2 (the inspire boots of course). I am going slowly so can't comment on act 3 yet.
