I am very confused with ending- lots of questions
Sorry this is so long. I have so many questions. Love this game and divinity but both share one thing for me- endings with very confusing parts.

I’m posting this to see which parts of my ending I am simply misunderstanding vs bugged vs “this is the ending so don’t expect anything more”.

Related context: Gale was my romance partner. I had all three nether stones and refused to give them to the emperor so he left me. I then turned into a mindflayer (it was me or Orpheus, I chose me as self sacrifice). I defeated the nether brain by dominating it and commanding it to kill all parasites and then kill itself.

1. The emperor leaving my alliance made 100% sense but What goal was he achieving by siding with the brain? I don’t even remember his goal anymore now that this happened. Wasn’t it to kill the parasite and be free of the brain? Or was it to get the crown? Either way siding with the brain would get him neither as the brain would then win. Also I ended up winning and killing the parasites so what’s the importance of his arc? I never evolved anyone, and didn’t like him pushing me to do stuff I didn’t want to do, so I figure he had some other plan that I’ll never know about?

2. I killed my self on the pier since we achieved what we set out to do (lose the parasite). I didn’t like the idea of my humanity being gone and I didn’t think mind flayers should be living / walking around. Plus I’d deal with people being scared every time they saw me. I was content with this choice roleplay wise.

I had dialogue with lazael but how come I didn’t talk to anyone else? Not my romance partner, not karlach who was going to die. They were all by me when I had the dialogue options to Kill self or stay alive. I was content with the suicide, but not the lack of the details.

3. Lazael- left with Orpheus to slay vlakith- made sense. Felt like the only full and satisfying character arc.

4. Karlach dies alone on the pier in a fireball. Makes sense but also highly disappointing that she’s just dying there alone. No one is even there to watch or wonder what’s going on? Not even background people. A fireball is going off in the city and nobody sees it.

5. Gale is nowhere to be seen. He was my romance partner. Twice during the final fight he sweetly offered to use the orb and I almost considered saying yes both times because he seemed ok with it and i really thought he deserved to live.

Where’d he go? Why isn’t he with the rest of us who were alive? What happened to his orb? Was mystra mad about not getting the crown? Did he die? Did the parasites being gone affect his orb? I had a quest to either get the crown and give it to mystra or get the crown and use it’s power to rid self of orb, so this was unresolved.

Why’d my quest journal have a quest for something I can’t do? By design it was an un doable quest because I was not playing as Gale and to do it requires things happen after the final battle (how to wield crown). I was expecting to have to complete it after we defeated the brain.

This one really stumped me. Especially with how sweet he was when offering to solo detonate against the enemy.

6. Shadowheart - present for ending. Had no memorable dialogue but I felt her story had wrapped up by now so I wasn’t shocked, even though it was weird that it was suddenly over. Since I felt her quest was resolved I felt this was acceptable just not great.

7. Halsin- present but had nothing really unique to say other than happiness about us winning. Nothing weird here i guess. He didn’t have any stake here so his role was acceptable just not great.

8. Astarion - may have been present in the background but forgettable if so. Had no dialogue or moments. What happens to him now that his parasite is gone? I can elaborate on his story choices if needed but in short killed cazador.

9. Wyll- my wyll was dead so not applicable. After I killed a bone dragon I found by following clues in a book, Wyll’s dad kept asking me to bring wyll to him when he was at my camp though…. Umm. He’s dead. Also is it intended that I find this dragon without a quest? I was surprised following hints in a random book got me such an epic dungeon.

10. Also lots of my non playable Allies before the fight didn’t offer any sort of benefit. Example- Arabella, vollo. Is this intentional? I understand if their presence was just symbolic but the other people offered a summon so not sure if I’m missing something.

11. I won by ordering the brain to kill all parasites then killing itself. If this worked, does Gale using the orb means nobodies parasites are gone? Or does killing it make the parasites die? If the latter, why’d I have to order the brain to kill the parasites? (Trying to understand different possible endings)

TLDR lazael is the only character who I got the sense had a complete story in my game, everyone else either vanishes or has nothing particular to say. Is this the intended ending?

It's a mind flayer, first and foremost concerned with its own continued survival. Based on the situation, it believed it was going to get killed by Orpheus, and the Emperor no longer had leverage over the party to make them do his bidding. So it noped out of there. As to why it joined the brain? Probably because that was the best shot at survival.

The ending is very...brief. In my run, about half of my team got diddly squat. A couple barely got a mention, and the remaining got some brief dialogue. Then credits.

There is next to nothing written on the ending, so it's up to you to fill in the blanks. Personally, I strongly dislike this decision. I also felt the decision on who becomes a mind flayer ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid as hell.

Overall, I hope you enjoyed what you played. Perhaps we'll see more in a definitive edition, perhaps we won't.

I dont think the Emperor had any choice. After he lost control of Orpheus protective magic he could be controlled by Elder Brain. Also "freeing" The Emperor first place was Elder Brain scheme to get itself freed from control of Nether stones

My ending was like"Hey let's grab a few botles and get drunk" Credit Screen.

Astarion mentions Karlach is ugly now. Laezal leaves with Orpheus. Voss isn't even mentioned.

Shadowheart tells me she needs more to drink.

And the rest ? What ? Nothing. Why did i even get em then ?

Ok the info yall give about the emperor was helpful. I didnt think about the fact that he'd be losing orpheus' prism protection so makes sense that he'd join the brain.

Im at least gld that im not crazy. I read something about karlach and gayle that makes me think their endings could be bugged: larian on the record stated that gale in particularly was "particularly horny" at launch and they had to tweak it so it progressed slower. Karlach also. I never spke to karlach and she was furious when i slept with gale. Point being, if these two characters were patched in some way after i started, i could see it affecting endings.

Theres so many possibilities with the endings. Even in divinity an old game ill have endings that i cant find anyone else had. Small details but things that matter. Point is since this game is new I imagine we will sadly first have to see all the possible endings people get and thatll take time.

Truly hope larian considers expanding endings significantly. This game has so much heart in the relationships. I have no idea where some of my companions even went....

Idea for someone out there: it would be cool to have a megathread with succinct endings for each character summarized, along with flags that made them possible of impossible. Example: i chose a b c and not d, and z happened" to help narrow paths down.

The Emperor was a liar all along. He was using you...that's why he keeps convincing you to use more and more tadpoles and ditches you the second you say no to something. And Gale is a ♥♥♥♥. You were a squid...he was out. He never kept it a secret. He literally brags about banging a god over and over. I was Karlach, I also went full squid, and killed myself. I got no other ending moment even tho Wyll proposed. Didn't say a thing. And Lae'zel killed Orpheus (I never used her....so there was no growth with her character).

Edit: gale didnt leave bc i was a squid, he said he was curious to explore my new form. Also as our romance progressed he said he regretted talking about mystra so much because our relationship was deeper and hotter ( its fine if you dont buy this in head canon, but im just going with whats officially in the game).

Gale never ever let me party he just vanished.

What happens if you beat the game with emperor on your side? I agree i didnt like the emperor nor trust him, but i dont think hes canonically lying. Wont know that unless we beat it with these things check marked.

To response:

1. Emperor have no ulterior motive against the brain. Period. If you pay attention to his background and piece together all the information by the end of the game, you get The Emperor is Balduran, the one who founded the city of Baldur's Gate. His last adventure toward Moonrise Tower was a failure, stumbled upon a Mind Flayer Colony which endedly badly. After he was infected with a tadpole, the identity "Balduran" basically cease to exist - coincide with the citizen to memorize him and his work by naming the gate that separate Upper & Lower city Baldur's Gate and it got so famous it literally became the name of the city where it may have just been a mundane name of Grey Harbor. The Emperor wish nothing to do with the brain because he was infected and turn into a Mind Flayer against his own will despite he gained immense power from being a Mind Flayer as oppose to a mortal men. At one point he escaped the psionic grasp of the Elder Brain and gone rogue and in hiding into a protected Astral Plane by abducting Orpheus - the Lord of Giths, true son and price of Giths' Mother. Emperor has been remained as a Power Player in Baldur's Gate by working with Patriar Duke Stalemate and the dragon Ansur. One thing to note - Balduran opposed to be a pawn of someone else, he insist he have the control of the situation, and since his turning into a Mind Flayer, he has been looking to stay immortal per se.

2. I don't see a question here - what is your question? It really boils down to how engaging you were with your companions - in party or not. Also their attitude toward the avatar (player), if you don't engage at all or rarely - it effects the ending and they've got nothing else to say to you. Literally a banded adventurers who will go their own way after defeating an common enemy threaten the very existence of everyone, for themselves.

3. I still don't see a question here, you need to formulate a question if that's what you're intended to do.

4. That's because you did not bother enough to find even 2 infernal irons to stabilized her infernal engines and exploded into a fiery death. And no, who gives two ♥♥♥♥♥ when the whole Baldur's Gate is in ruins, Patriars are all dead, Upper City leveled and splits into many leveled grounds.

5. Something is probably broken on your ending, didn't use Gale on 1st playthrough but I'm using him now 2nd. And I'd assumed he just went his way to reunite with Mystra should you completed his personal goal before the final fight.

6. I honestly think this is more of a summery than what you intended to be a question.

7. My Halsin in 1st playthrough bugged after he was abducted by Orin - rescued, mind you. But lay dormant on the sacrificial altar like a dumb ♥♥♥♥.

8. If you didn't help Astarion to transcend, take over Cazador's place and sacrifice 7000 souls in the stead of Astarion, he hates you if he wasn't already hating you and blames you for not taking him to see to the end of Cazador and not letting him take the transcend ritual to actually become a vampire rather than stuck a spawn forever Also anyone should know what happens to a vampire, vampire spawn when they contact sunlight - be it daylight, dawn, noon, bright light, sundown, dusk, etc. That's exactly what happens to Astarion.

9. No such thing as intentional planning. The only close resemblance of such would be Duke Ravengard asked you to seek out the validity of Legend of Ansur (yes, "answer") - which duke firmly believes the dragon exist but how much of it is truth he too questions himself. So yes you can stumble upon and into the wyrvm rock dungeon below the prison - but it might as well disrupts some final moment dialogues, especially the Emperor side

10. I may have missed a thing or two with Arabella - maybe. No comment on that. As for Volo, so much so (again) you do your diligence of engaging with various characters you get their support in the final fight. Volo literally shares "his knowledge" on Mind Flayers and give you attack boost during the final fight. minor but nontheless.

11. I'm just going to say play for different endings - if you just want to know 99 endings there are at once you might as well don't play at all.

he doesn't necessarily hate you for that - in my playthrough I did take him to cazador fight and persuaded him not to go with ascension, he then slaughtered cazador and got some closure to his being abused arc and then thanked me for seeing potential in him to become someone better
and in the ending cutsene he got hurt by sun and run away, promising to join us on after saving the world drinking (but by that time I was in hell with karlach and wyll :P
