Magical Item - Forge

Can I forge a new item from an already magical item ? Because I do not find any common greatsword, I sold the one I had and unfortunately I cannot find it. I already have 2 of them I use and a regular one +1 magic I do not use.

The forge quest in act 1 can give you a nice greatsword, yes.

There should be some on a weapons rack in one of the basements in the blighted village.
I think there's also one in the basement of the Toll House (where you meet the Paladins of Tyr).
