is there a way to disable the "lock onto character" option forcing the camera north?
I like being locked on so I often do so right after selecting things etc, but every time I do it the camera is snapped to NORTH facing direction. which 75% of the time is NOT the direction I need to be looking in. its quite annoying and legit is my one and only complaint so far.

this game is so great but the wonky as all hell camera control/point and click nature is a huge turn off. especially for someone who is already overwhelmed due to no experience with this type of gameplay OR DnD in general.

so, is there any way to disable this feature? would be very nice.

Try the camera mod, it's very nice with wasd control, plays like Dragon Age 3

I've never seen or experienced this, assuming I've understood you correctly. The camera snapping to a character automatically when you leave combat or when you select a character portrait is normal, there's an option to choose how this is handled in settings.

I've never heard of or seen the camera snapped to a character while simultaneously rotating the camera to face north. I've never seen the camera rotate at all except when I tell it to.

Are you sure you're not just referring to the minimap? And that you don't have the "north facing mini-map" option on? Does the camera actually rotate?

As far as I know that sounds like a bug

lets say I use WASD to move away from my character.

then push my keybind to "return to character" or "focus on character" that way the camera attaches and follows a character.

when doing so it faces the camera directly north.

so lets say when i was freecamming I was looking south. when snapping to a character to focus on them it changes the camera direction to directly north. (NOW i have to rotate my camera manually 180 degrees to see south again.)

pretty simple. that is the only issue nothing else i stated was an issue

Ive heard it makes WASD not work at all for being able to observe your enviroment which is detrimental to gameplay since enemies can be behind walls etc.

That's not correct, you can toggle it from freelook to character movement as you like, and it automatically reverts to free-look in combat.
If anything, you have even greater freedom of movement with the camera then the unmoded game

Never heard or seen this and don't see any setting that describes it. I'd assume it was a bug unless you're using mods?

its a vanilla thing.

have you never used the focus on character keybind? it makes the camera follow your main character.

when using this it moves the camera to face north. or just blips it north when teleporting to where your character is.

you can go in game and try it right now.

Sure, I use it constantly. It's literally never rotated the camera though. I don't think I've ever seen the camera rotate on its own or as the result of anything but me pressing "q" or "e". That's why I was asking questions, just trying to learn and help find a solution.

You're experiencing something completely foreign to my experience. When I have the camera follow a character, it follows them facing whatever direction I already was and never rotates, it just merely follows.

Since you aren't using mods, it may be worth a bug report to Larian?

when my character is facing south. and my camera is facing south.

if i push my keybind for focus on character it dynamically and very intentionally moves the camer over and behind my character to face it north. now my character is looking at the camera instead of away from it and now I have to manually move my camera using the left and right camera options to make it face the direction i want to see.

it does not seem to be a bug because the camera does a very intelligent and dynamic movement that seems intentional. (also i wasnt trying to sound rude)

EDIT: im specifically talking about the "Centre camera on character" keybind.

https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=692245 this forum link is a conversation of other people who have the same issue so its not just me.

apparently recentering the camera with the keybind forces the camera north. while double clicking the portrait does not.

thats annoying. defeats the point of being a quick keybind if its less convenient

We're totally on the same page now. I'm duplicating exactly what you're describing.

My confusion came from the fact that I normally center the camera by clicking on the character portrait on the left-hand side of the screen, and then it moves the camera to wherever they are without rotating at all.

I almost never use the "home" keybind so I didn't even realize it also rotated. It's definitely not a bug then, you're right. In this case, I don't think there's anything you can do about it. Its clearly intended, and I agree, really jarring if you're facing south.

Your best bet is to probably do what I do, click the character portraits on the left to center the camera to their location instead of the keybind.

guess ill just have to break habit.

a shame considering keybind is WAY more convenient and functional considering I dont have to go out of my way to focus on a specific part of the screen.

I dont understand the north facing thing at all and hope they add an option to disable it or remove it all together because its not useful really at all.

I never really noticed because I use an eye tracker to alleviate hand/finger pain from mouse use, so it's actually easier for me to click the portrait.

Larian very well might add the toggle in the settings eventually, wouldn't surprise me. The problem is that it could be a year or more before that happens. It would certainly be pretty low on their priority list =\

yeah. as someone not used to this genre and gameplay style the camera is really the only thing that is making it hard to play. not because its difficult but because its mentally draining having to rotate and work around and zoom in and out constantly. I might try using that WASD mod. might make the experience more enjoyable.

aside from the camera being atleast to me not a fun way to do character control in a game everything else has been a blast one of the best games ive played ever in that regard.
