Just justify it as a gift from his goddess.
I feel the same but cannot place my finger on why it feels that way.
though I guess that's the Larian writers and not the WOTC writers.
I don't know how to do spoiler text so trying to keep things as vague as possible.
WoTC wanted it to follow more closely to Minsc's and Boo's Journal of Evil and other lore-related DnD stuff, regardless of what people preferred. So I highly doubt WoTC would let Larian make such a massive implication with Balduran without giving consent to it first.
That is such an awful book that I was stunned to find out it is supposed to be an official source.
The best part about anything D&D is that at best you are given suggestions of how things can go in your campaign/game. Don't like a particular rule? Don't use it. The people who write books involving Forgotten Realms and other D&D based material often change "the rules" as it suits what's deemed best for their characters.
For example, Rai-guy Bondalek is a male high cleric of Lloth, even though males weren't allowed positions of power, much less be a cleric. Drizzt was introduced as the first with purple eyes. Etc.
For every "rule" there is an exception, so go ahead and create it.
Besides the fact it's fairly normal for companies to directly supervise how things are handled with their IP, but WoTC has made some REALLY rough decisions regarding what's "canon" over the past few years. I'm just glad that at least Minsc and Jaheira are mostly faithful to their BG1/2 renditions here.
