Cursed clubs of evil. I eventually figured out which ones were cursed and banished them in Act III, and hilariously enough they equipped onto the trader himself. The weirdest part about that however, was the fact the trader wasn't even a human. They still equipped on him appropriately enough though:

Not even Protection From Evil and Good can protect you from this level of evil
Truly the most cursed item in the game, lol. Kinda hope they don't patch them and instead turn them into their own unique item though, like an NPC with an actually cursed pair of clubs you can loot. I wonder what other mischief you could get up to with them.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this issue, anyway.
Either way this game is a damn mess. Are these the only weapons you encountered that do it? If so, why these ones specifically... I wonder if they were originally meant to be what you give to the gnome, and they had trouble getting him to equip weapons so that is why they auto equip?
It's odd though when I put it in the searchbar no other threads mentioning "Moonrise" and "Club" showed as results. It seems like this is a glitch anyone should run in to.
I didn't have any problems unequipping them or anything like you did though. I just kept passing them around after I realised they were a problem and getting annoyed by them, lol. Eventually sold them off in Act III and thought it was funny they glitched to the trader. I bet if I went back and killed him they'd still be cursed though.
Must be a script attached to them or something yeah, might be something to do with the gnomes, although they didn't ask for weapons for me, just a little warhammer.
It must only happen under some bizarre circumstances, possibly?
Normally in combat, you would have to spend an action to equip a weapon then wait until your next turn to attack. To make the prisoners not completely useless in combat, they made these clubs equip upon entering the inventory so they can immediately fight/break the boat chains.
Regardless, these clubs were awesome. I would reverse pickpocket them into NPCs that had good weapons equipped and then steal their weapon (which is now unequipped in favor of the club).
These clubs were the best item in the game, I think they are patched now though cause in my current game I can't use that exploit rip
