How to ethereal escape?

It's the first time I've encounter this ability, the enemy escape to their plane every time it takes damage for 1 turn. Is there any way to prevent this?

I tried 'hold monster' but it still retreated. I have 4 party members just waiting doing nothing until it returns, very annoying.

I mean, you just not supposed to kill that dude then i'm guessing. Unless he was saving Hold person... ? Try to make a silence spell on him before attacking him ?

You just have your biggest hitter slap him each round, also hold person carries over even when 'escapes' so he still looses his action.
Was quite a booring fight of 'hit once' skip turn and repeat.

Not sure what genius though that would make for a fun fight

It is basically Blink. And annoying... one piece of a defence. But certainly not enough by itself.

I noticed that if you attack during the incubus' turn, they don't ethereal escape. So, surround their position to get attacks of opportunity, leave some glyphs of warding by their escape route, and use damage over time.
I agree though that given how unthreatening the fight is, it's mostly an annoyance

It's a reaction, if you stun him or prevent him from taking reactions in another way he won't do it.

You still want to kill him as its the only way to get a piece of Helldusk armor.

if you have the health for it, you can get it to attack of opportunity an ally, then it wont have its reaction any more and you're free to wail on it

Command: Grovel and he wont escape anymore. makes the fight really easy.

put melee fighters next to him. Sometimes when he re-appears he will stupidly move and give everyone an opportunity attack. Those opportunity attacks don't make him disappear.
