If you try to pick a lock, the controlled character's skill is used. Considering D20, anyone with Sleight of Hand and Thief Tools can open locks at the beginning when the DC are around 10-15.
Just in case, the Thief Tools get "consumed" (destroyed) only on failed attempts and there are alternative ways to open locked objects, from breaking them (RMB => Examine to see the resistances) to casting Knock.
Mine would only sometimes. It seemed about half the time I would have to micromanage with linking and unlinking. It was actually why I stopped playing, to be honest.
Laezel is best lockpicker.
By not being able to make the jump I mean because of their stats. Following what I describe above will resolve the follower jumping issue completely until they patch it.
Adding to this, you can also enter turn-based mode at any time which lets you precisely control them and then resume once you've gotten everyone where you want them.
As for locks, no, it doesn't select who's best at it. You have to do that.
1. pray
2. get mad when that doesnt work
3. try using a mod that adds flight to all characters since surely then they cant refuse to follow over short gaps
4. tear your hair out because even that doesnt fix companions deciding they just wanna stand there
5. click on character and try to make them jump
6. Swear loudly at the screen because when you switched to the other character all other 3 party members jump over to where that character is
7. After calming down realize that for every jump you have to ungroup the party then make every character jump individually
8. Spend several hours wondering why they made micromanaging companions worse than the old Ultima games ever did
