weapon damage question
Hi, when looking at weapons, the damage showed on the item rarely is the attack/damage numbers under the equipped weapon on. Even if I'm proficient with the weapon and have good stats (e.g. 18 in Strength for a strength weapon). E.g. the Giantslayer says 9-29 dmg, but when I equip it on a level 12 Barbarian, the damage shows as 11-21. I see this all the time across weapons and characters and was hoping someone could explain to me.

When I find new weapons, I don't pay attention to the damage shown on weapon anymore. I swap weapons in and out to see what the damage shows on my character screen below the equipped weapon, and then decide what to use.

All tooltips are from the point of view of the selected character, so be mindful if you're on the character that's meant to use the weapon when checking its stats.

your method sounds fine, if nobody can explain it I'd say keep doing that

The damage it shows is determined by the character you have selected, thus if you have the barbarian selected it will show the stats for the barbarian, including proficiency.

Sometimes when previewing weapons, it might show the stats as if that weapon was being used by your MC, instead of the currently selected character.

This might be the source of your confusion.

Other than that, I'm not sure what the issue could be, other than a skill that is not correctly used in the preview window.

Luckily the 5e damage system is very simple and there should be little to no room for confusion if you just pay a little bit of attention.

There are bugs on weapon proc display still, I have stopped worrying about it and just test under battle, if you dual wield for example, if you wield unwield the same weapon on the same hand quickly, it'll toggle different values in a cycle that change over time and makes no sense.

The number you see on the weapon is the number IN TOTAL.
The number on the sheet is the base weapon damage without additions... ie it doesnt include the fire damage on the Everburning sword, for example.

The numbers on the weapon will even include the conditional damage as well ...which often does not apply because it is conditional. the numbers on the sheet are just the base weapon damage, by skill and abilities. Always applied damage.

Also you will see a wide range for damage on both weapons and spells/canters but your proficiency, buffs, and luck determine if you’ll be in the lower range or higher range of the dmg. spectrum for that item / spell. So say a sword that does 5-24 dmg. If your character doesn’t have enough strength, proficiency with that item, and/or sufficient buffs — you will see the low end of that.

But also — not just strength. Say for finesse weapons, you need dexterity too. And the abilities vary somewhat depending on the weapon. Dexterity is an Ability Score and a key ability of Rogues, Rangers, Monks and other wielders of Finesse weapons.

Ok, this makes sense. Thank you.

Yep. Ability is the key here. And buffs that create defensive disadvantages and offensive advantages so that you deal max dmg. You can have a spell or weapon that does max (potential) dmg of 100 — but the weapon itself is only one factor
