That being said, it all depends on what you like in a game. Shadowheart is a bit of a driven zealot. Asterion seems like a horndog but there is more to his story. I've only started three of them but all have something new to offer.
But I agree that making a custom char is probably better.
Personally for your first playthrough id suggest dark urge or just going custom character. That way you see how the origin charaters stories are "supposed" to go, and on subsequent playthroughs playing an origin gives you more insight into their thoughts on situations and giving you a "what if" version of their story
I've played shadowheart as origin and she has cool lines related to Shar/Selune and her own quest but i'm defintely picking her as a companion in my second playthrough to see all the companion lines i've missed.
Imo It's more your playstyle and how you wanna do in dialogues.
I'd advise some charisma/intel character for your dialogues if you wanna interact constantly with your main character, it'll give you the best dialogue possibilities (specific persuasion checks and so on).
This right here. And if you are only going to play once, why not build the character you want, rather than jump in as a preset. Let your imagination run and be what you want to be.
Or, don't play just once.
Or Gale because Wizards snowball hard in power if you use them right and can swap their spells around on a whim to better suit the situation.
Well you'll mis a lot of specific companions lines anyway as your group may contain only 4 at a time.
Playing origin in 1st person gives you cool lines as they have specific interactions (shar, gythianki, and so forth). And i think you may have specific companions interactions as both are origin characters.
I was very happy to do the trial of Shar playing Shadowearth.
