Rogues should be a bit more respectful to the group i.e. ask before they pick pocket/unlock/do their thing; since they can fail and helping them out i.e. talking/distracting is good team-play.
Combat is generally a light discussion with others i.e. I'll take care of X. The boss fights require some level of coordination.
Running off and doing your own thing can be helpful but often is annoying.
Generally speaking I've played enough of the game where I just let the person that hasn't been "the face" be the face (so they can experience all the dialogue via their choices) and just vibe with instruments while they talk to npcs and lead us around, accepting whatever options they choose and rolling with the punches (we typically end up in fights with guards a lot because of it).
I don't bother listening in on every dialogue since I've blasted through the game several times. We do the whole voting thing but we encourage the speaker to pick whatever option they want. We typically wander off and group up when we want to move on to a new area, sometimes we do fights on our own but generally "hold the fight" on our turn if it looks like we can't win it on our own.
Basically, the way I play is practically the same as an NPC companion but with combat AI.
