How to place an item on an altar?

Okay, I have four weapons that need to go on altars, but I have wasted the past hour trying to figure out how exactly to do that with the interface. Drop does not work, as best as I can tell.

maybe "throw" since you can target?

Open your inventory, click and drag the item over the bench until you see the outline of it light up I think it's a light blue almost white. The arc from you to the bench will be blue showing it's good.

Open your inventory, click and drag the icon from the inventory interface and over to the altar. You will have to be close to your target area as your character will not move into range.

If you are getting knocked back, you are trying to put the weapon on the wrong altar

The inventory takes up the whole screen. So I can't drag from it to the altar -- can't see the altar with the inventory open.

I already tried dragging from my hotbar, but no joy there.

It won't work from the item bar. Open the single character inventory with I, don't use Tab that opens up the whole party and blocks the screen.

...move the window/screen to the side? It doesn't NEED to be glued to your selected character's butt. Your viewpoint (aka the camera) can move quite far from you. Then literally drag and drop.
Can also drag the inventory screen around. They move too.

(edit) Not the Tab "all characters at the same time inventory" screen... just ONE character's inventory. The one with the weapons you want to place

you can also drop it on the ground close inventory then just drag it from ground to alter

Thanks all. Never noticed the individual inventory screen before, no need.

Interface-wise, they sure made this obtuse, but hey, it's all worked out now.

Did anyone else try to replace the idol of Silvanus with the idol of Selune from the owlbear cave? I thought for sure the druids wouldn't notice if I did it behind a fog cloud and some stealth.

Nope. They noticed immediately.

It would have been hilarious if this caused a different cutscene or something.
