Otherwise, MOST of the time it seems to play a song. Once in a while I get animation and no sound, or she just quits outright, but 99% of the time it plays a tune until you move or do something else. Sounds really nice with 2-3 players, one with the drum.
I am standing still, it cancels immediately.
Try uneqquipping your instrument, and equipping back. Maybe a different instrument if you have one. If you have the gold, try Withers and pick another starting instrument. Perform naked and see if that works.
I've noticed some passives, like Freecast does not work when you equip something. It just gets broken and grey, you unequip one thing and it works then it doesnt, equip thing back everything is fine, but after a while its broken again
If that doesn't work, maybe it's borked.

I am in the cresh trying to pickpocket the quartermaster since i didn't save enough money in act 1. however she has two guards that patrol around her. I tried moving her away from them with minor illusion before talking to her, so that she stays where she was when i talked to her but the others would go back to where they were supposed to be. but the guards are assigned to be in her vicinity.
so i tried to perform to draw them away from her, that worked but as soon as i steal something with a different character the performing character ends the performance, and the guards come rushing back to interrupt my stealing. this only happens when i steal something. otherwise the song continues without interruption.
I eventually succeeded by luring the guards all the way out into the hallway and then performing while lazell blocked the door with barrels so they couldnt get back in when the song was forced to end ( i cannot help but love a captive audience;)
The moment he took off the Cinder Shoes, he just kept performing. I tested it with Thulla's boots, and he could play fine in those. It seems some random items, that trigger a condition, but not all of them, stop the play immediatly.
But really, since Wyll get's heated in said Cinder Shoes, when he burns someone, I guess his lute play is simply that hot. 🔥
TLTR: Play naked.
