Or maybe more accurately the assumption that something can't be "mature" unless it's also "adult" if that makes any sense.
I think it may be because for a long time, especially in the US, sex in particular was considered inappropriate in mainstream media. Then as big block buster media came out and slowly started doing more and more of it to push the envelope in order to get lots of attention and be taken more "serious" it slowly became more accepted in most media.
I think the "serious" part comes from the fact that sex is a normal consideration for many parts of life, good and bad, and to shun it in media is a little odd because it's a natural part of life and affects it immensely.
That being said, it is possible we have seen a swing a little too far in that direction, kind of losing sight on what the purpose of the sex was to begin with, to be taken as a more serious and literal representation of the world - not to produce soft alliterative media.
This is a real issue, and it addresses missing content.
