Something I never understood about gith and red dragon lore?
I'm not a lore aficionado but I do understand that gith made a deal with tiamat and many are able to ride red dragons. But I also know red dragons are one of if not the most proud stubborn creatures in D&D lore often considering themselves gods. So I always wondered how and red dragons would even consider githyanki as anything more than pets let alone ride them or even treat them as companions.

I know red dragons do benefit in this from wealth and items that they both receive. It's just weird that a red dragon would ever from even being a hatchling deign to let another creature be it's companion let alone ride it. Perhaps someone with more lore knowledge could explain it to me.

1: Themat the goddess of the evil dragons told them to do so.
2: They get massive wealth, praise and respect from the githyanki for a few hunderd years of service.
Dragons live for a thousent years.
What is 300 years to a creature that lives for a 1000.
Make no mistake.
If themat didnt tell them to do so the githyanki would burn for the insult.
But since she did why not make the best out of a bad situation.

I mean if you had to work for someone because your goddess said so(and you really dont want to piss her off)
Woudnt you exploit it for max gains?

Mostly the Tiamat thing, partly they benefit, but also the upper echelon of Githyanki are just that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mean that the dragons toe the line.

Basically it's hard to establish yourself as a young dragon. Your clutchmates will try and kill you, establishing a lair is dangerous, and treasure is well guarded.

Spending a few centuries in military service, being fed and learning to fight, is a good deal until you can establish yourself better.

They don't do it because they want to, they do it because Tiamat, the goddess of chromatic dragons orders them to. She has a deal with Vlaakith.

They are also just young Red Dragons, not the powerful ones.

Because pretty much everyone across the entire multiverse of D&D's settings agrees that mind flayers suck and need to die. Plus all that stuff other people mentioned about it being a good way for young dragons to amass their own horde of swag and get some good combat experience.

They are ordered to, and so they do so.

Make no mistake though about the Gith'yanki - they aren't like regular mortals in the Forgotten Realms setting. They are interdimensional conquerers who if not for their obsession with hunting the Mind Flayers would likely be able to lay waste to much of the rest of the cosmos. Red Dragons might be proud, but I think that they could recognize the power of those they work together with and respect that at least.
