How exactly does stealth work in this game?
So I'm trying to sneak past a certain act 1 encounter preceding a certain uh... fey character, and I'm having trouble doing so despite countless save scumming. I'm not sure why, but when I try to sneak with Lae'zel (who's using her default medium armor), I have to pass stealth checks if I enter the enemy's LOS. That's fine, but when I do the same thing with Gale, who has the same stealth bonus and just a robe, I get no stealth check and immediately get uncovered. Does anyone know why that is?

Is the ground red? If yes, you basically are caught.

hold Shift to see what enemies around can see.

Are you 100% certain that Gale, and all following, have entered stealth as well? If you press 'Shift + C' that will cause the whole party to enter stealth mode. Just pressing 'C' with the character you are controlling will only put the one character into stealth and not anyone else grouped up with that character.

To be clear, I know about the vision cone mechanics, I'm asking why sometimes I pass/fail a stealth check and sometiimes I just "lose hiding" without getting any check at all.

Yeah, at first it was just gale, but after brute forcing it enough I got him through and then saw the same phenomenon on shadowheart. Go into stealth, get spotted, instantly lose hiding with no stealth saving throw, but only sometimes.

I've since just save scummed my way through but at this point I'm mostly just curious why it happened. is it a bug? Are there hidden rolls that sometimes happen without any notification? Or is something on the ground possibly breaking stealth?

It's a lot easier to stealth past enemies in turn based mode, you can also use the arrows of darkness to create clouds that most enemies can't see through which allows you to easily stealth through most things.

Very strange, I have not encountered this at all - whenever the party uses stealth, they all have stealth checks appearing when entering enemies FOV. The only other thing I can think of is a major long shot but just throwing it out as something maybe trying. Turn off Karmic Dice if you have it on, I have no logical reasoning why this would impact this but for some reason I get this feeling it could be lol.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Best of luck in your search for insight.

No worries, thanks for the suggestion. I do have karmic dice off. I was thinking it might be due to accidentally picking up one of the plants lying around or walking in a puddle, but I don't think either of those were happening nor do I think they break stealth. At this point I think it might just be a bug with that particular encounter, but I suppose I'll find out eventually. I don't really play stealthy much so we'll see :)

From what I've gathered:

While stealth you will see the vision cones of enemies, if you walk into these you roll a stealth check to see whether or not you're caught.

HOWEVER, there is a "light level" that determines how well you can be seen where you're hiding. When you hold shift and see that little sun icon beside your cursor that's the "light level" of the area you're hovering over. When you're in a high light level area hiding, it doesn't matter if you're in stealth they will always see you. You will only roll the stealth check if in medium light or below. Things like bushes and shadows provide more cover and therefore lower the "light level"

Maybe Gale walked into high light level/took a slightly different path than Lae and got instantly caught?

again I'm not 100% on all this, just my experience playing through the game.

This is a good point - to expand upon it further, is it possible Gale has some sort of spell or equipment that is causing him to emit light himself? This would impact how the game processes stealth if he has a form of light emitting from himself at all times as well (there is equipment that does this for example).

not all the time, u can use spells like pass without trace, invisibility [potions and scrolls works too] or have high agility + perks in equip to be absolutly invisible everywhere
