There are some +2 ac bracers early on, that works unarmoured and stack with the barb. AC
That does leave you with 3 main stats to improve (STR, DEX, CON), but you can kinda bypass that by equipping the gloves that set your Dex to 18, which is higher than the average Barbarian should expect.
Or just leave Dex at 14 or something and wear the armguards that give +2 AC if you're not wearing armour.
Well of course, but that's not barbarian specific...
Now I'm gonna have to cry myself to sleep wearing Minthara's clothes...
I would but they're covered in blood.
Completely unrelated, Asterion's undergarments are still in a backpack where his body fell in my camp. I'm not going to touch them. I don't want to know where they've been.
For for weapons, kill the Devil commander on the ship in the first act and grab his sword. it deals more damage than the great axe you start with AND it deals a bit of fire damage. this should carry through all of Act 1 and until you find a better weapon in Act 2 . find a heavy crossbow if you can, as you need to inflict damage in order to keep on raging, luckily ranged attacks count. If you cannot find a crossbow, pick up any javelins and hand axes you find and use them as throwing weapons.
For Armor, nothing. As a barbarian you get to add your constitution modifier to your AC on top of your dex, so long as you ARE NOT wearing armor. so there really isn't much difference between wearing clothes and being naked unless you find enchanted clothes that don't have any armor tags.
If you're going for a throwing Barb, then you probably want a high AC so you don't have enemies in melee range. In this case you probably want as good as you can get.
But that's more for a throwing build. For maintaining rage, Heavy Crossbow will do until better options present themselves.
IMO if the enemy is stupid enough to waste their action disengaging or taking an opportunity attack, let them.
