I got the cub in two playthroughs following these steps:
Kill mom
Avoid killing owlbear cub
A cutscene plays after kill where cub is sad
I talk to the cub after cutscene and choose not to kill it
Go to the goblin camp after 2 or 3 rests
Chase the owlbear cub successfully
Kill all the goblins (First time I saved the goblins outside for last, second time I killed them first)
The owlbear turned up at camp several rests afterwards. Idunno if it's timed or it was because other events triggered first. The second playthrough, it turned up in the mountain pass and again in the underdark, so location probably doesn't matter so long as you haven't changed acts.
Keep in mind that the owlbear cub may show up a couple times before it becomes a permanent camp follower.
another long rest later and he returns with an injured foot and says "I hurt" (remember to have speak with animals cast to make this easier"
make a medicine check to treat the wound and he stays in camp.
When using speak with animals after you free him from the goblins he more or less tells you he will follow you after the goblins are gone because he doesn't feel safe trying to leave yet.
This is how it has played out for me on 2 runs.
I did write it never showed up at the Goblin camp, this is easily seen when you rest after killing or sparing the mother. If the Goblins have been to the cave the mother is dead and the cub is gone.
But I did check the Goblin camp every time, there was just a chicken.
If you can't even get it to leave the cave, your game is bugged and you need to verify files and restart probably.
I don't understand how you're all having issues like these, I played through act 1 9 times and I only just started act 2 for the first time. 300 hours in act 1, and I've gotten none of the bugs you all claim to get. Starting to think it's just big game companies paying people to make Baldur's Gate 3 less attractive so they don't have to raise their subpar standards for their next games, because they know Baldur's Gate 3 will blow any game out of the water that is made for micro-transaction moms-credit card targeting games.
Literally you walk into camp, chase it in the easiest minigame in any rpg ever, and then intimidate or persuade or illithid mindcontrol Grakka or whatever the ♥♥♥♥ into giving you your winnings and then the cub after speaking again to her.
There is a tendency we humans have, it´s to repeat our errors in a play through. Could be related to something else like f.ex. the goblins at the windmill, I thought of that, maybe they are the ones going for the mother/cub ... so I did that first this time around, it wasn´t that.
I have this exact problem too. I've done more of the beginning than I would like to admit to just get this owlbear.
My durge one I convinced Edowin's siblings to attack the owlbear, but sniped them outside the cave without talking to them. Killed the first Goblin ambush to get to [redacted]. Went in the cave, retreated with speak with animals. Tried to loot the skeleton and killed the Mom, spared the cub. Chicken at the goblin camp.
I thought it was telling the siblings to kill the owlbear but not go through with the whole thing in the cave was the problem. So I killed the siblings by confessing I'm a survivor. Killed first goblin ambush to get to [redacted]. Went to the owlbear cave, retreated for approval. Then killed the Mom, spared the cub. Chicken at the goblin camp.
Now I think it is killing the first goblin ambush that prevents the owlbear cub from getting kidnapped. So, I killed the siblings by confessing. Immediately went to the cave and retreated for approval. Killed the Mom, spared the cub. I've slept a few times and the cub has not been kidnapped.
My guess is for flawless getting the cub. Either tell the siblings to kill owlbear Mom, kill her. Spare the cub and I think kill siblings then? Goblins should kidnap it a few days later. OR kill the siblings by confessing, spare the owlbear Mom and actually spare her and leave. Come back to goblin's having killed the Mom and a missing (kidnapped) cub.
@Don. I understand your pain. The freaking white chicken being chased around in the goblin camp instead of seeing the owlbear cub sucks.
I wonder if you ever see the chicken once then the owlbear cub will never show up.
Never had a problem till patch 2 as well.
I have wondered this myself. Reloaded and slept a lot in front of the goblin camp and white chicken every time.
I tried killing the siblings by confession, then attacking the Mom and sparing the cub. Slept. Owlbear cub still there.
I did a test with telling the siblings to kill the owlbear. The siblings died in the attempt, but the Mom died. I slept and went back to the cave to find no owlbear cub. As far as I can tell, right now, the only way to get the owlbear kidnapped and into the goblin camp is to encourage the siblings to kill the owlbear and spare the cub.
