You're only locked out of the Mountain Pass and Act 1 areas (including the Underdark) once you progress past a certain point of no return warning message at the end of a big dungeon in Act 2.
You don't even need to double back either, as you can access the Mountain Pass from the Act 2 location and likewise you can access the Underdark from the Act 2 location as well.
Is there a point of no return?
Don't step on the boat OR don't go up the elevator. I'd count the boat as starting a timed mission and the elevator as Act 2
(by grymforge quest i mean saving nere and the gnomes)
grymforge does have a time sensitive quest but it doesn't scuff any of your act 1 quests like the mountain pass.
Best advice is to stop worrying about what you'll "miss," that's what a second play through is for.
My first play through I did something before something else and lost the chance to go do that other thing. That's what happened and I kept on going. You can't save everyone.
The point of no return is very obvious in Act 2. It has to do with the thing they're all looking for. And you get a pop up I think before even entering the area to start it. It says something about the consequences of your actions will have an impact and could cut you off from certain parts of the story if you haven't completed them yet.
