Level 4 Feat.
I found that my 4 party members benefits all from the same feat, Ability improvement. I'm I too conservative.

Alert. Ability lame.

Eventually you WANT/NEED ability improvement, specially on casters.
The only time I'd argue where you don't need ability improvement is eating Auntie's fey hair and making Astarian do some whacky ♥♥♥♥ for a damn good potion for strength characters.

Many of the feats are underwhelming. The increase is almost always better. The one exception is elemental resistance negation on casters, and sentinel on 1 of your martial fighters running pole master.
Outside a few specific builds, ASI until you're core stat is 20 is basically the optimum Strat across all of 5th edition. (And those specific builds is shield user sorcadin, because they can't cast with sword and shield until they take warcaster, but that's not a thing in BG3 so heyo ASI).

The potion and hair lets you go above 20, no? (Although even with getting your strength to 25 potentially, you're still short of the elixir of cloud giant strength. :P)

You go to 22 with one ability improvement. So cloud giant is still going to be higher.
You can also choose not to go higher than 20 outside of cloud giant, and use your two feats for something else.

War Caster, Great Weapon Master and Alert are also really competitive.

Alert can be good, especially on a tanky character that might have poor dex. Sentinel is fun on a melee character. I've also made use of Dual Wielder and Mobile

My monk took tavern brawler at 4 . Then alert at 8 and ability only at 12 to round up the skills.

But yea overall you want ability at 4 then whatever weapon your character use at 8 like great weapon master if it’s 2 handed or sharpshooter for rangers/ rogues etc, then if you haven’t multiclassed , alert or another ability at 12 to get your main attribute to 20.

Fairly cookie cutter , most feats are very niche or have only very marginal benefits.

At level 4, +2 to your PRA is pretty good. I'd argue better than GWM and Sharpshooter. You probably aren't going to be using the -5 to accuracy for +10 to hit that much at level 4 so a +1 to hit, DC, damage, etc. is probably a better choice (at level 8 a different story). There are some feats that are to be going better, like Resilient:Constitution on a caster who needs to maintain concentration, Tavern Brawler on a STR Monk or thrower build and Alert. There are a couple of others that can be useful on the right build like Magic Initiate: Druid on a War Cleric to get Shillelagh. I know people complain about useless feats in 3.x, but most of these 5e feats are pretty bad too.

Savage attacker and Sharpshooter are good too

Laezel and Karlach really benefit from GWM at 4. Karlach can use the added damage with reckless attack, but the real draw is maxing damage with their bonus actions.

Dual Wielder and Polearm Mastery are likewise worth it early.

GWM has a lot of utility when exploring since you can bypass Medium Toughness with ease. Karlach is easily able to offset the accuracy penalty, as is Lae'zel if you get Precision Attack as Battlemaster. Season with Bless and you're off.

Heavy Armor Master is also surprisingly strong since I believe it can stack with other sources of flat damage reduction.

This is honestly one of the worst things about 5e. There are so many bad options. Bad feats, bad spells, bad archetypes, bad classes. Most are painfully obvious they're bad as well, or they're so situational as to only be good in a very particular kind of campaign.
Lefurtif126 Sep 4, 2023 @ 9:31pm
I've installed a mod myself to get 1 feat per level up and god it's so good to have the freedom to choose all the other feats that are either too situational / too weak / social bonuses / only for roleplay. :cleancake:

Because having only 3 feats at lvl 12 makes ASI / GWM / Sharpshooter / War caster mandatory and almost nothing else.

Considering you can respec at any time...
