What kind of eggshells do people expect others to walk on for their benefit?
What do you mean?
And despite disapproving of every nice thing you do, to truly embrace his darker nature he needs you to assuage his guilt and ultimately literally be his eyes for the final act. He's not capable of following through on his own, he NEEDs you to be complicit.
Gale on the other hand is your prototypical "nice guy" who's blinded by his own ego and privilege. He thinks he'll always do the right thing, but he doesn't. He thinks he can't make mistakes, but he does.
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm curious as to what would happen if you don't give into his hunger of wanting to devour/adsorb all those magic items? I think in my next play through I'm going to find out. LOL
All 3 of them? Then he leaves so that he doesn't blow you and everyone else up.
He made a mistake, he's trying his best to fix it, and in the end he fully plans on blowing himself up to set it right and save the sword coast.
Very different character to what you are describing.
He has a literal nuke in his chest that he has to feed or it's going to kill everyone? Would you want to be forthcoming with that kind of information with someone you just met?
Wha?
Right. Just like Astarion is also full of himself seems glad to make a deal with the devil/use the tadpoles to become stronger. Like Lae-zael who is essentially intolerable unless you get her to come around. And like Shadowheart who also acts like a selfish butt in the beginning unless you build approval with her and are open-minded about her religion.
Most of the companions have flaws that make them unlikeable or irredeemable.
Eh I felt like I was dictating what Gale thought and believed more than the other way around. If you have him talk to the Mystral statue in act three you can basically convince him to approach the conversation apologetically, confrontationally, or cautiously. I also decided for him what he did with the crown too, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Astarion is a different kind of narcissist, the kind that desperately needs validation and hangs on your every word mewling for approval but hides it behind a front of false bravado.
He prides himself on being a psychopath but he needs you to assuage his guilt and hold his hand and literally be his eyes to go all in on it. Still bad and all but no where near as dangerous as the kind of narcissist Gale is. Just by being in your party Gale is putting you at risk of a magical Chernobyl event.
She's basically an alien fascist who's entire culture revolves around dominating and killing enemies of the Gith, but she's very up front about everything, she even tells you on the first night you camp that she'll attempt to take your life at the first sign of Ceremorphosis.
That's the thing though, you acted in that narrow window in which he tries to persuade you to keep an open mind. You have to shut him down and push for reconciliation with Mystra there or you miss your opportunity to persuade him at all.
He makes a compelling argument for why he should be allowed to do the research, at a point when you can't be sure there's a better alternative or what the implications of the research would be.
Jesus, who wrote this crap? He's not just the most naturally talened magician of his generation, he was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the literal goddess of magic and he has a DARK SECRET OOOOOH.
He is also mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ level one.
Somebody at Larian should stop inserting their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ tabletop PCs into their video games. As a distraught questgiver or supporting character he could be tolerable, as a PC he is an abomination.
