Is there a way to visually look more like you're not becoming a soul sucking tentacle monster when you do this? My female character is covered in exposed arteries and darkened eyes.

No, it sucks but imo just get only 1-2 people in party to get the full powers. its more than enough. game is already easy even in tactician mode.

I unlocked it for the character i thought was damn ugly anyways, Karlach, since it doesn't really make a difference if her face becomes more ugly.

There is a mod for it. But I suppose the whole point is that it is a sacrifice of sorts.

You don't need the powers for anything, they are a waste of action, or once per fight boosts that don't really matter.
