Fighting Nere
I don't know if this is intended or a bug, but fighting Nere makes your paladin an oathbreaker.
Now I know it's because of "innocent" characters dying, but WHY THE ♥♥♥♥ are they flagged as innocent, if they join him. Even if you talk to him and choose all the class [Paladin] options in dialogue before you fight him and his minions, you'll be branded oathbreaker.
I sincerely hope this will get fixed soon or I'm done with my playthrough...

The problem is, always, "you cant have your cake and eat it".
If you "save nere" to "kill him", you breaking your oath.
If you just long rest, when you wake up he will be dead, and you can take his head and deliver to Sovereign.
However, the broader issue is: If you are a paladin and made an oath, you have to stand by it. Being a paladin means you most likely one instance or another, will have to fight your way rather than making cunning dialogue fight. So you might not be able to lie your way into infiltration. If you playing a tabletop and do this, you probably have the same problem. And there is no "bugs" there.

Being a paladin is pretty much the "reverse" of being the Dark Urge if you dont want to become oathbreaker (which is solvable, I think). You have to do the "right thing" even if you think it is not the smarter or the easy way.

As a paladin, you might probably have to go fighting your way through the forge, being honest that you are there to kill nere, so when the time comes, you have no problems.

A) I never made an oath to save Nere
B) I'm only breaking him out to save the gnomes
C) The tenets of the Oath of the Ancients don't state deceit
D) I have in fact already deceived Minthara to get her into position to kill her

Not fighting him made me break oath of vengeance, by the way. Which is good, since i had been trying to break the oath for some time now.

i can confirm as oath of ancients paladin that i also got duergar on my side and killed nere without breaking the oath. im not sure what triggered breaking the oath for you

two thirds of that are broken by working with a slaver, as i just said.

I was specifically quoting you saying "breaking your word is an instant oath break for ancients."
fair enough, i was probably looking at devotion at the time, my mistake there.

i was just pointing out that like, it is very easy to break your oath in the forge for like 2/3rd of the oaths due to how its laid out.

As I said in the main post I'm pretty sure it's because some of the minions joining him are flagged as "innocent" and died in the fight. And that could very well be a bug.

who were the 'innocents'? gnomes? did you talk with them before and told them about your plan to kill him? just checking

you can try getting someone else to land the killing blow, not your paladin. also, try as someone else suggested doing nonlethal attacks on everyone else but nere

I think the other Absolutes' minions that are flagged as guards in Grymforge and instantly join Nere, might be flagged as "innocent"....which would be slight BS to be honest.

well, as i said. i got duergar on my side, at least some of them, and got through the fight without problems. perhaps try again if it really did bug out
