HUD Portrait Question

To the left of the action bar is a portrait of your selected character. Under the portrait I see a small heart with numbers. The numbers are different for each selected character, and some characters do not have this. Even my PC has a heart with a number. What does this mean?

Around the portrait there is a white bar that is filled up to various amounts for each selected character, or not filled up at all. I thought it might correspond to XP but for Astarion it is around 1/2 to 2/3 full but he just gained a level and if I click into his character sheet the XP bar is still around 1/6 full. So... what does this mean? I thought it might also have to do with hidden/exposed... but when I walked from dark to light nothing changed. What is this?

Those are temporary hitpoints you get from various sources.

Well... that makes a lot of sense. Now I feel dumb.

What about the white bar around the portrait?

The white part is just a circular bar around the portrait similar to an HP bar. It decreases according to how much temporary HP you have left and disappears completely when you have none.
