Because that means to create another set of animations and items, namely the slings and special ammo for it.

Because no one would take a ranged weapon that deals 1d4 damage

Yeah I feel like slings were made pretty irrelevant by the improvement of cantrips over time.

So many weapons missing, are we going to make a list?

If slings scaled with strength, I'd want one.
Quillithe Sep 3, 2023 @ 9:22am
Having strength be important for slings and not bows would be kinda weird though

Slings were pretty popular in BG1 and BG2, but the characters who would use slings have cantrips now. I don't see them get used in most D&D 5E campaigns either. If a spellcaster feels a need to have a simple ranged weapon, they usually grab a light crossbow. The times when it would come in handy are pretty limited, usually silenced or an area where magic is blocked. But BG3 has an arsenal of thrown weaponry (and objects) that's significantly more useful than doing poke damage.

I would only use a sling in 5e if I was like...a monk with the Crusher feat. Because then you can make it scale reasonably and knock people around on hit once per turn. Plus, they have the mobility to get around the weapon's terrible range and a hand free to actually load the thing.

Everyone else has cantrips, thrown weapons (light hammer) or better ranged weapons.

It's pretty easy to make slings useful. Everyone has proficiency with them, adding utility would be enough.

Have cheap enchanted bullets, a 1d4 + Elemental Dmg isn't as irrelevant anymore.
Keeping with the theme this would make other magical effects more useful since you don't need the dmg. For instance Bullet of Darkness or Bullet of Transposition (cheaper than other ammo types) allowing the user to use their effects.
Bullet of Barkskin, a spell that usually requires touch now can be used in range.
Bullet of Water, soak target in water.
So much stuff...

They didn't put a Halfling as a companions why would they care for to put a sling?

I guess it might be a 5E thing. I noticed they weren't in Solasta either yet darts where. of course since they have none of the elemental or poison upgrades that bolts and arrows got no one uses them.

There are a LOT of really, really stupid mistakes in D&D, but this is one of the worst. A skilled slinger can hit with extremely good accuracy and the force of a modern small caliber handgun. Slings should probably do 1d6 + str bonus + dex bonus damage. It was a nasty weapon that held its own until repeating firearms came into play.

There's a lot of weird things in D&D ranged weapons.

- bows don't take or benefit from strength despite being one of the most strength dependent weapons around

- slings are very ineffective

- slings are treated as the easier weapon to learn to use than bows, which is just obviously backwards

Having light crossbows as the default ranged weapon for people who didn't really train with weapons makes so much more sense, since that's basically the point of crossbows.

They made it possible to use handed crossbows on each hand and reload them with your mind :P
