The target is the Brain behind the portal, not the dragon or the other mindflayers.
Edit. Might be preferable to save between turns when the Brain starts to destroy the platforms.
You can also pop all your allies as distractions, if needed, if you do not have either of those spells ready, dash towards the brain, and hope for the best. Usually that works, too. Just have some of your ally spawns deal with the mindflayers shooting magic missiles. Otherwise they will interrupt your mindflayers thing or try and machine gun it down on the way.
Dame Aylin does a very good job at keeping the dragon busy, if you have her. She can solo tank him for quite a while and even solo kill him.
Just make sure that all your party members (not the allies, they have completely stopped mattering at this point, sadly) are close to the brain towards the end of it.
This because portals and misty step spells and trinkets usually deplete before you get there ( you cannot long rest the whole fight up to the end ) or during the attempt to get up the stairs.
The fight before you reach the stairs is massive but if all is well you have ample reinforcements you should call upon, and conserve your spells. Even the lowly flaming fist and such literally kick ass when placed well. ( in my case they literally kicked spell casters off the walls and if they were still alive launched up to 3 javelins after them from the walls, killing them ...really fun to watch that )
And as you have learned during your way up to that point, places with explosive barrels should be ignited if a lot of enemies still surround them. For that you get dragon or artillery strike reinforcments.
If you don't send Gale with his nuke you will get a second round of reinforcements. The only advise there is dont forget to use them at the beginning of each character turn. Well placed it really makes a difference.
The gith dragon summon wall of fire does ton of damage. Spread it across the dream people and emperor (ignore dragon, it's immune) They die at the start of their turn just trying to get out of the fire.
Summon watchers, harpers, whatevers for the tentacles. Summon someone strong or use one of your own for the dragon (my paladin solo'd it) and rush the platform, take out mindflayers, use special ability at the top, run in the portal, burn down brain, and win the game.
