Companion approval in Multiplayer
So would my GF be able to get approval from for example Wyll while I control him?

The answer is no.

In MP, you have to control a character in order to get approval. If your woman wants to get approval with Wyll, you'd have to dismiss him and let her control him for a while. Same goes for romance, you can't romance a character that's being controlled by other player.

I wish we had other means of approval outside of dialogue then

If someone is controlling him, it's not an NPC...

The above isn't true - I've played coop and I do get approval / disapproval for the companion that the other player controls as well as my own.

What IS annoying is that companions controlled by the other player can't interject during dialog, so we've reloaded a few times when the "wrong" PC did something important for our companions' personal quests.

Also, as the secondary PC, I've never been able to romance anyone.
