Hit chance and do NOT move questions
1) Are the hit chances final or are there more factors that are not taken into account when displaying hit chances? When an enemy is close to death and I have a chance of 80%, I miss a lot.

2) Is there a way to keep characters from moving? I play with a controller and use quick targetting...everything takes much longer than with mouse and keyboard, but the UI is bigger and I need more hands for work...so controllers are more convenient. In the thick of the fight, I only want to shoot with my crossbow, but the char moves...often resulting in a bad position.
When using quick target, the text reads "not enough movement" although I want to use ranged combat WITHOUT moving! Or I'd like to do something...but the char moves although I don't want him to...any ideas?

1: Hit chances are final unless you have karmic dice turned on. Everything is already calculated out and the final odds displayed. The only thing it doesn't take into account are reactions you or the enemy have, like the war cleric channel divinity or enemies that have the shield spell.

2: Never used controller, so sorry, can't really tell you. However, if it's similar to KB&M you just have to take your time and carefully target ranged attacks instead of using quick targeting (i assume that just selects an enemy and tries to take a shot at their center mass?) because oftentimes you have to aim slightly offcenter to shoot past obstacles.

I have yet to land a spell with Shadowheart..even the weakest goblins roll saves.

Thanks. I use quicktargetting because moving the "cursor" is slow and unresponsive. There is no up and down function...so the game sets how the camera moves...bird view is better, but everything's small and you cannot really see lusters.

1) 80% is 80% always, it doesn't suddenly change.

2)your character will only really move if they are out of range when calling for the attack, your best bet would be to move first to ensure your in range before asking to attack

#1 isn't entirely true. I've observed situations where I will see the melee percentage to hit of a target not reflect a condition (like darkness causing blindness) that would be applied once the character moved into position. This, luckily, can be avoided by #2.

Moral: move into position before attacking.

Sorry, KB&M player here, so I can't talk about the unwanted moving.

Hit chance is purely determined by the enemy's AC and your attack roll. With an AC of 16 and a +8 to attack, you need to roll a 8. That's a 65% chance. Most characters can get a +8 or +9 pretty easily, at a high level (for the proficiency bonus), with a high stat and a magic weapon. An enemy with plate and a shield will have 20 or 21 AC. That's about as high as they'll get. With a +9 you need an 11 or 12 to hit, 40-45%. Most things will have a 16-18 AC. Each point lower AC or higher attack roll is 5% (100% divided by 20 sides on the die). I'm not a math genius so I don't know how to calculate the percentage when Advantage or Disadvantage come into play. You can use things like Superiority Dice or Bless (just a couple examples) to get bonuses to your attack rolls, or Blind, Restrain, or Paralyze the enemy to make them easier to hit.

If something only has a few HP left, from about 1 to 10, a Magic Missile spell is a guaranteed kill. You can upcast it to reach a higher threshold (by adding more missiles), but it may be better to use a spell that does damage even on a save or miss, like Ice Knife or Acid Arrow (I think). Or use a spell with multiple attack rolls to improve your chances (namely Scorching Rays).
