Is it possible to select a character without moving the camera?

I like to sometimes select characters individually and move them to a specific location, but every time a select a new character the camera centers on them, and forces me to pan all the way back to the location I want to move them.

Most games it's tap once to select a character and tap twice to center the camera on them. No idea why this game just automatically centers the camera on whoever you select. The majority of the time I don't want that, and it just makes controlling my party clunky and obnoxious.

I agree, I would like this changed. I would like the camera to stay where its at, and a double select (key press, like pressing f1 twice in quick succession) to pan the camera over.
