Cant switch character during dialogue?

I'm in dialogue and I hit the switch character button on the lower left, choose someone else. Is it not supposed to switch to that character so you can move around while the one in conversation is still talking?

I hit the portrait and it stays locked in conversation no matter what. This is happening when doing the final conversation with Auntie Ethel deep in her lair.

some conversations pull everyone who was in ranged into the talk, annoyingly incosistent, just dettach characters before approaching
