Metamagic for days. In every single game that has them. They almost always are viable and balanced good enough to play with. While different melee - range characters can have very different experience and not always the most smooth, but still interesting.
Cleric.
Or rather spirit guardians. A pity it's a level 3 spell so you need 5 levels in Cleric. I would like to have an Owlbear druid running with spirit guardians around it. Such a good spell.
Barbarian.
I liked in BG3 running a lot, jumping very far and throwing people very far as well. It's just fun. Not mentioning tons of hp, dmg reduction and strikes for just being a pure barbarian without any multiclassing.
My second favorite is a War Cleric / Vengeance Paladin Multiclass. Or full War Cleric. And here's why.
We all know Paladin have absolutely horrible spell slot progression and way too many concentration based spells to handle. They have one button, sometimes two. Divine Smite and Lay on Hands. And that's it until they Long Rest at which point they just become an objectively worse Fighter.
A Cleric is a full caster and so they get a considerably larger amount of spell slots to cast all the spells they have access to. They also have Channel Divinity options which are insanely good and come back on a Short Rest.
A War Cleric? Can use heavy armor and all weapons, just like a Paladin, except with better slots and spells. A War Cleric can also take an extra bonus action attack (limited uses based on Charisma).
More importantly? They have access to things like being able to grant themselves (or later an ally) +10 to hit enemies once (and later twice and then three times) between short rests. Which combos well with Great Weapon Master.
And then there's the spells. Like Spiritual Weapon. Spirit Guardians. Warding Bond (which grants someone a +1 bonus to armor and saves AND resistance to all damage for the whole duration). Guiding Bolt. The list continues.... but when you have this much offense and armor class? You only need healing spells to pick up a 0 hp ally and get them back into fighting shape.
So there IS hope for clerics, when they're used appropriately.
Finally, my last favorite build is a Two Weapon Fighting Battlemaster Fighter that can empty manuevers into their enemies accross several attacks per round.
Another playthrough will be with druid and/or monk. Most other classes are there for the companions, not something my party face will be. Maybe also a barbarian just for a totally chaotic evil playthrough with no survivors anywhere. And if I want a bit more challenge in tactician mode, something with wild magic sorcerer mixed in. Damn, so many interesting classes...
Oh also. Respec Shadowheart - if you mean her - into a Light cleric or War cleric. One gets fireball and your cleric becomes a wizard. Spirit guardians also kick ass.
And on top of that there is a gear or a couple that give allies that you heal - Bless and Resistance to physical dmg - so just 1 low level aoe heal gives whole party an insane boost for several turns.
In early access I also liked playing druid. My next run through is gonna be with a barbarian/paladin multiclass. I like playing the face character and melee mostly.
I tried playing cleric for a little bit, but I didn't enjoy it as much.
Mechanically I'll never use a dual wielding paladin.
I like the idea of someone being so hungry for arcane knowledge they are willing to pray gods for it while reading everything they can on the subject.
For bg 3 it's easy to do as well : level 1 cleric rest wizard
Can anyone say full plate armor caster with shield and 25-26 ac + insanely high spell dc ? ^^
Pure Cleric is S Tier in Tabletop AND BG3.
Tbh it was quite a struggle for a first run, my party was super squishy. But I stuck to it and it's perfectly fine at higher level with so many spell options (and with more knowledge of the game).
Paladin next, super capable and I really like Lay on Hands - so much better to bring up a dying mate to half HP then waste a turn on a Help, which will just get them killed next turn anyway.
Next time I'll try a fighter/rogue, bc I envy Astarion's effectiveness. Honestly, he's the single most useful char in the party, with those one-shot crits from stealth, but also holds his ground in melee... Let alone the constant 30+ rolls on his skill checks. So yeah, I'm gonna go dual wield dexterity melee next.
Warlocks and Druids are kind of a mystery to me, I haven't really had a chance to take a deep dive in their abilities. I also don't get what they are supposed to do, e.g. should Warlock be melee (bc of Wyll's Blade lore) or not? I didn't have time to look into them yet - doesn't mean they are bad classes of course! I had Halsin in my party for a bit but again, couldn't decide if he's supposed to be tanky or stay back or heal/cc or what. He dies too fast in animal form so meh... I ended up tossing him in the camp and just go with my favourite paladin-rogue-mage comp.
Bard - no clue.
Bard - Another toolbox class that has excellent skills and crowd control. A master of support and a full spellcaster.
Sorceror - Metamagic in this game is beyond busted and Sorceror is the best Mage class in this game because it's Charisma based. Charisma is the most OP stat in BG3 because it's useful in every situation of Dialogue. Any pure Charisma class like Sorc, Warlock and Bard, Charisma is easy to stack and benefits their spell DC, Attack and Dialogue.
Warpriest was amazing for act 1, but i sense its going to fall off hard because the limited extra attacks.
Berserker javelin barrelmancer is hysterically broken.
