I don't understand this Covert Cowel description - can someone help?
Found this Covert Cowel underneath the Last Light on a Meerlock. It's description reads:

Covert critical: While obscured, the number you need to roll a critical while attacking is reduced by 1. This effect can stack.

a) what, exactly, is the "obscured" condition?
b) how, exactly can a +1 to crit range stack?

Cheers.

obscured is not having any light revealing them, they're in total darkness.
depends on the item it can but most items say that it only makes a 19 a crit meaning it wouldn't stack.

Thanks for the reply and all but I'm still just as confused as I was from the item description.

I mean I can guess what it might mean but it seems to me there a very specific set of conditions that trigger this item's abilities and it's very unclear what exactly they are.

For example what do you mean by the crit range bonus stacking being "depends on the item". I can't fathom that at all.

Another example is "total darkness". I don't think I've come across any reachable location in the game so far that is not either full light or half light according to the meter. I don't even know what "total darkness" looks like or if it even exists in the game.

Obscured is any shadows in the game basically

Heavily obscured would be magical darkness/fog or shadows in a cave or something.

Are you standing in a visible light source(or carrying a torch or something? You are probably obscured unless outdoors in daytime

Vrit rate stacking is because there are multiple sources of that effect.

Normally you crit on a 20, with the hat 19, add in undermountaim king shorts word 18 vicious elixir(the crit one obv) 17 a feat that does it 16. Assuming all of those are active at the sam time obviously

Heavily obscured can be caused by the level 1 spell FOG CLOUD, or the level 2 spell DARKNESS. Both of these effects blind you, however, unless you have a way to see through magical darkness.

Fog cloud allows people to still attack you, however.

Darkness is SO DARK that no attacks from outside can go through into it, and no attacks from INSIDE can escape it. But you need "Devil's Sight" to see inside it, a warlock invocation.

Regarding CRIT RANGE:

The +1 crit range on the item can stack with other items that give +1 crit range, like I believe there is a Dark Justiciar helmet or armor that also gives you +1 crit range.

1 item means you crit on a roll of 19
2 items means you crit on a roll of 18
Level 3 fighter champion means you crit on a 17... you see where this goes?

There are also areas that are naturally dark enough to count as heavily obscured. You can hold Shift and mouse over areas to check light levels, and how illuminated they are is indicated by how filled in the circle is.

when you enter sneak your cursor changes into an icon. This icon tells you whether the area your cursor is over is light, obscured, or dark. This icon is in the shape of a sun, a half sun, and a new moon.

there are a bunch of items and one subclass trait that allows you to lower the number on the dice you need to roll a crit. It would be cool to make a build around those items, and trying to get crits on rolls of 15+. Usually in dnd lowering the number you need to roll a crit doesn't stack.

An attack roll of 20 is a crit.
If you fullfied the condition "obscured" (you gain a buff) then you need an attack roll of 19-20 to get a crit.
You can have more items that give you the same bonus and thus continue to decrease the minimum value of an attack roll to get a ciritic

Thanks for that.

I understand now that the crit range bonus stacks with other items you may be wearing that also have a +1 (or whatever) crit range bonus.

On the "obscured" question from what you (and others here) are saying this depends on the light meter you get when you enter sneak mode which can say:

full white circle = not obscured
half-white circle = obscured
full black circle = heavily obscured

Therefore the condition for triggering this crit bonus is you you must be in a location that has either a half white circle or a full black circle (either will do). Just being hidden in full light is insufficient presumably.

I wonder whether, given the description, you actually have to be hidden at all as such?
