How to not kill vampires

So i get an encounter at night with Astarion and 4 vampires.

I dont want to KILL em as then Astarion cant ascend anymore surely.

I have non kill on but i keep killing em its almost undoable.
Like my main character does radiant damage with every hit.

I had one 'escape' with something once but i dont know how to trigger it.

Can i make it so they all escape? does it matter?

You can fight them normally. They,ll be okay.

Ranged and magic attacks are lethal no matter what. It only applies to melee, I think.

Ah ok thank you Cheese lord. It does appear they arent 'dead dead' after winning the fight. Nto sure why the game says 'you killed' em though... I mean they do go up in smoke but the text says killed its confusing.

Yeah, I was confused by this too, but they basically go mist form or whatever and escape when you "kill" them.

Do your best to "kill" them, it does not matter.
