Is there any point in knocking out enemies?
So far it seems like the game treats knocked out opponents the same as if you kill them. After a long rest, they're always just gone for me so far. Only in Act 1 still, so idk if there's an impact later.

In most cases? No. It's just there if you want to do the whole role play thing and not kill people. In some cases? It lets you avoid killing an NPC who you can talk to later (assuming the game doesn't bug out and kill them anyway)

knocked out 2 NPCs on quests throughout the game

I know of one enemy where knocking them out has actual story consequences. However, I usually kill everyone anyway (besides that one enemy), as I'm guessing virtually everyone does, so it's unlikely anyone can answer this question with 100% certainty.

Very few instances where it's even remotely useful.

non lethal is only relevant in like.. 3 -4 VERY specific situations 90% of the time it treats them as dead anyways as far as quests go. and only ONE of those specific situations is actually important (and the game will straight up tell you DONT KILL THEM before that fight starts so you can't miss it... unless you don't bring the relevant party member... in which case you wouldn't know you missed it anyway!)

spoilers for act 3 quest if you want it....to get Minsc you need to non lethally knock him out while Jaheira is in the party

I just used it for RP for my good party in some fights especially in chapter 3 and one companion quest.

In act 1 I only found 1 person who stays as "defeated" in the quest log as opposed to died.

There's an NPC I had to damage in a fight to work out if it was her or someone else and so I switched to non-lethal, knocked her out and then finished the fight. I couldn't wake her, regardless of shoving or healing and after a long rest the quest log had her down as being knocked out, followed by being killed.

I suspect on this alone that it simply isn't working properly.

the knockout feature being pointless was what brought me to the forums for the first time. i wanted to knock out Nettie thinking i would need Halsin's help later and he would be pissed if i killed her ....knocked them out and then was REALLY frustrated that they included rope in the game and i can't tie people up.

I've found it useful for hostile merchants, you're still able to loot their full merchant inventory save for their gold. Seems like if they're killed you don't get everything.

the only people you can safely knockout (and have them SURVIVE) are the pre-mentioned spoiler NPC in act 3 (my previous post) and anyone who's flagged as "temporarily Hostile" knocking those people out and long resting brings them back

That's not true.

If you accidently agroed friendly npc you can knock them out. For example in Grove, when you want to prevent tieflings killing goblin in the cage and fail the dialogue check, you can knock them out instead of killing. After the rest they are not hostile.

I think it works pretty well in Act 1, later in game it stops working because game is not polished enough.

Also I think it doesn't really work well on story and quest related npcs, for same reason, it would require more than just to lower their attitude to you, it would need dialogues and stuff.

That passive kinda helps you though

Killing requires bringing an enemy's hp to 0
Knocking out requires bringing an enemy's hp to 1

If a dangerous enemy is low on hp, you might want to have the knock down passive toggled on... otherwise they might survive at 1hp and still be a threat because you didn't knock them out instead

Gloves of the growling underdog treats unconscious enemies as valid targets, so knocking out the odd well placed foe makes sense.

To getMintharain your party you need to knock her out when she is hostile. I missed that one. Not a big deal.
