Oathbreaker seems badly designed?

It was already stupid enough that I got blamed for something someone else from my co-op party did. But ok, I'm an oathbreaker, fine.

But why the hell would I need to pay 1000 golds just to change my fighting style? I don't want to redeem myself by paying for shady guy in armor. I just change to respec so I can be more efficient in two-handing...

Am I missing something?

Not sure who you have to pay, but if it's withers then apparently you can steal the money back with 0 consequences if it bothers you.

By 1000 you mean 100 , which is literally couple of minutes of gameplay at worst?

Because Larian was having trouble coding a version of character respeccing that limited oathbreakers from just making themselves unfallen paladins again via Withers and ducking the 1000 gold penance tax, is my understanding.

If you're an Oathbreaker you can't respec from Withers unless you repent, which is 1000.

You're a support class for undead. Your melee class was back in Oath of Vengeance or whatever. Generally speaking, spellcasting classes are better at your job. Only Spiteful Suffering and Aura of Hate are unique, if nothing else does the job better.

You can pickpocket both withers and the Oathbreaker NPC in camp after paying the price

Depending on how far you are, just restart and go Oath of Vengeance. It's a better subclass in my opinion. And it allows for pretty much 'anything goes as long as you're killing evil' for the most part.

I didn't know you could pickpocket the Oathbreaker NPC, I'll try that. Restarting isn't an option, we aren't too far in Act 1 but my friends would never agree to it xD

It's not Withers, it's another NPC. I paid 1000 gold and he stayed at the camp, for now. I haven't rested and I've heard different stories.

It shouldn't be hard them to add a simplistic flag that if you have broken your oath before you can only become an oathbreaker switching through withers, and if not you can become the oath swearing paladins and not an oathbreaker.

Paying definitely seems like a poor way of going about it.

Paladin was already my least favorite class to play as, no need to add vaguely-defined side objectives with a monetary penalty for failing.

I would have much preferred either they add a quest to redeem back to the original oath, or to not let that happen at all. The gold thing seems off. But then again, Withers does a lot of stuff for gold also. They might as well have added a kiosk.

My real gripe though, is that I can't respec. I understand that I can't change oathbreaker. But I might want to alter stats, or add levels of another class (Sorcadin comes to mind).

The bad design is paying 1000g to fix your broken oath. There should have been at least a fight or a puzzle, if not a series of quests.
