im pretty sure your saves aren't stored in your install location, i downloaded the game before i bought it and the swashbuckling saves carried over perfectly.

If you install your new SSD, install Steam on it, install BG3 on it and then copy (rather than move) your save games to exactly the same location on your new SSD as they appear on your old HDD you can't lose anything since it will all still be there on your old HDD.

Basically it's all a lot easier and safer if you add the new drive rather than replace it.

Idk about migrating saves, but if this is about loading time, rest assured that's long on SSD as well.

This. COPY not MOVE Save files.

I bought a new PC 2 weeks ago, was mid act 2. Moved Save files on portable SSD. Got an error message about file corruption wenn moving the files from portable SSD on new PC. Save files lost.

Stopped playing for now because of this. Might start a new run soon, but loosing 80h hours progress hurts ;-)

Saves are stored in c:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public\Savegames. So either make a backup if you are afraid of losing anything or just uninstall your game (savegames usually don't get deleted or the user is at least asked whether they want to keep them) and reinstall on your new SSD. The short version: no problem.
