Commander Zhalk
Is it important to kill him. If then how so, it seems mostly impossible, the Mind Flayer barely damages him and my character and two companions barely damage him also. On top of that at turn 9 reinforcement arrive, I cannot deal with this.

I went straight for the transponder. But is there a way to kill him ?

The easiest way is to just keep trying until the mindflayer doesn't miss. If you're desperate, save after every turn IF the mindflayer does damage. I'm sure some people know how to just do tons of damage that early but that at least works.

And it's not 'important' to kill him, but you get a fire greatsword that's really useful early game

So I could just use the Drop weapons command from the clerc and steal it then. Thx

Yeah, though there's an achievement if you actually kill him so you probably want to pull that off at least once

There are explosive barrels nearby for killing them both if you get the timing right.
He gives you enough experience to hit level 2 at the start of act 1, if you're impatient.

The sword he drops is purportedly good enough to get you through act 1, but I actually find him easier to kill with a warlock main or whatever. You could take shadowheart and try throwing a shield on the mind flayer. Zhaik is pretty difficult to take out with a Paladin. He doesn't attack you until the flayer is dead but he's got a lot of hitpoints...

eh you hit lvl 2 the moment you hit the beach (or after the first intellect devourerer fight at least) i had US turn on me last game and i dinged 2 as soon as you wake on the beach =/

Take advantage whenever the mindflayer manages to stun him- Shadowheart comes primed with Inflict Wounds and Guiding Bolt which are nasty at first level. If you can land the gith's pommel strike and/or rush attack, those will help tip the odds in your favor as well; past that, use your Tav's abilities carefully, don't waste them fishing for good luck with the 40% hit chances you're likely to have.

Important to note, though, that if the mind flayer turns hostile when the Commander dies, and unlike his opponent, the mind flayer gets attacks of opportunity which will easily down your lowbies. Plan accordingly.

Worth it

So basically what's worth it, is the sword. I'll go for the sword.

Did it first try on balanced. Must of got lucky? Healed the Mind Flayer, he wrecked the commander every hit. Commander missed every turn!

yeah the sword is 100% worth the effort (though is basically equal to Sword of Justice or the Greatsword that gives the line shockwave shortrest attack both of which are +1 weapons so hit more often then Everburn)

I just yeeted those purple oil barrels onto him and his own attacks ignite it. Two or three of those and yer gud.

How exactly do you throw them at him, I'm a bit loss with so many options and buttons to click lol.

Honestly the only reason you kill him is for the xp, the weapon gets replaced pretty quickly and is literally just a greatsword permanently dipped in fire, you'll get +1 weapons before you leave act 1 so it's really not all that important to get it (even less so if you don't have a party member that can utilize the weapon).

If you want to kill him you can just wail on him every turn after you clean up the trash (on both ends of the room), if you don't kill him by the time the cambions reach the mind flayer you just bail (it's easier to kill him if you use command : drop on him since the mind flayer will live longer). You can use the nautiloid tanks to blow him up but that's usually risky since it's hard to judge how much damage they will do.

Personally I just wipe the room, command drop him, then wail on him until he dies and leave the moment he does die.
