Your wizard level up selection basically only matters when it comes to saving money.
You do bring up a pretty big problem with the game though. The existence of ritual spells at all is not apparent. Spells are only marked as ritual spells if you already know them and try to cast them. And the game doesn't tell you what the ritual tag means even if you do notice that it's there and can cast the spell.

There is one tiny cost - you have to keep Longstrider equipped or those you've cast it o will lose the effect.
