Is Not Healing Upon Leveling Up a D&D Thing?
I don't know much about the mechanics of D&D. In almost every RPG I've ever played my characters and party have always gained a full heal from the leveling process, but that isn't the case in BG3.

No, you don't heal upon leveling up, you do gain extra HP (based on constitution) that does start 'full' though.

On tabletop levelups are usually going to happen inbetween sessions since no one wants to wait around while you work on your character sheet.

Usually levelling happens during a long rest, mostly between sessions.

There's no rule about healing in D&D. Leveling up takes a long time in D&D. It would break the flow to level up mid session. And while it has happened it doesn't confer any extra benefits.
Correct. Leveling does not heal wounds.

In my experience most GM's use levelling by achievement or milestones.. have yet to play in a single campaign that actually used exp.. in tabletop (at least according to my own fairly extensive experience) the gm will have an idea of when and how the party should get a power boost..
when they want to start throwing harder things at the party and as such they will chose an appropriate time to tell the party "and you levelled up so please have your character levelled up by next session" usually it happens after defeating specific people or bosses or reaching certain points of the campaign..
Indeed campaign books themselves describe that once players get to this point give them a level and so on and as such generally when you reach these milestones it will usually coincide with some spare time for a long rest

Interesting, it seems the tabletop is quite the different beast. Perhaps it's time I invest in some rule books and broaden my horizons.

Many thanks folks.

Wanna drop in here just to say that I love how someone gave op the jester award just because he doesn't fully know/understand dnd mechanics. You whoever did it is the true clown and a pretty pathetic oxygen waster. It's not like OP went on a tirade saying how ♥♥♥♥ 5e system is or whatever else.

Not only that's not a thing in D&D but as a DM I purposely award experience gain after combat (usually between two sessions) to prevent awkward situations like you are describing.

Honestly I didn't notice the award at all, but thanks for the decency mate.
