The game assumes you want to 'throw' something from your inventory by default, and if you exit out of that interface with 'B' you should then be able to use it on enemies.
You'd have to cancel twice in order to actually stop casting the spell.
Then your telekinesis works entirely different from the version of the game I'm playing.
Works every time for me.
I'm confused what's happening. Are you trying to Telekinesis something from inventory? Don't you have to highlight, (X), Drop, then Action menu to Telekinesis it?
It assumes by default that you want to throw something from your inventory, but when you back out of that it should give you the option to target things in the world to manipulate with the spell.
While I haven't tried it, it's also possible you can just select something in the world to manipulate even with the inventory option open. I haven't tried that since backing out has always worked for me.
