Just by doing that I think we unlocked everything, relation mostly effects skill checks when trying to persuade them to do things I think.
Also our method was if we knew a conversation would have lots of relation boosts we let the player who was romancing the companion lead the convo and if there are any checks we would just brute force them unless it was very difficult and in that case we swap out to our face. (The charisma Character)
We are doing the same thing, I just hope it would be enough. Maybe it was because I was gunning for Shadowheart, and her companion quest isn't start till Act 2. I just wish the approval improvement work across team members, not just for the host alone.
In that game, Shadowheart is still at Neutral with me after the grove fight, and friendly with the host. Despite the host don't really interact with her at all to not contaminate the approval system. Those "getting to know her" options arent even appearing. I mean, I am in the party too, fighting next to her. but seem like the game treat the Multiplayer character like he doesn't exist in major cutscenes.
Player 1 makes a dialog to gain relation with their party members through open dialog, player 2 does not get the relation for that check)
So I'm guessing either you are not controlling shadowheart directly on the world map and your friend who is friendly with her is or you are having some sort of bug that makes your game see your other players as hirelings of sort and thus makes them unable to gain reputation, I'm kind of stumped in that regard and you may benefit from making a post in the technical difficulty tab if you don't find an answer soon
Not saying you are wrong because it can be a pain in the arse to balance it all in MP, but romance is not really that in dept in this game, once you do a major event such as a companion story stage it usually triggers the next stage of the relationship in most cases minor quests don't really effect it or dialog much and in that sense it does not take too much investment, we were able to do 2 romances in my 3 player play through and the third player could have probably done it too but they just did not want to
