Jaheira?
I don't understand why they created such an inherently unlikable character and present her as if she's not just an overtly evil ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that any morally upstanding character would kill at their earliest convenience... and then have Karlach fangirl over her as if Karlach didn't actively want to kill the exact kind of horrible evil creature she is. Am I missing something? The very first interaction you have with her is her seeing a group of innocent passersby and immediately threatening their lives while cutting off their escape, and upon being proven to be a piece of ♥♥♥♥ publicly when that information is revealed her next move is to try and have a ♥♥♥♥ measuring contest to save face? Like... the only difference between her and Kagha is that Kagha at least had reasonable and morally good motivations for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ things she did. Jaheira's just evil for the sake of stroking her own ego, and for some reason the game doesn't seem to treat it that way.

Why is this piece of garbage treated so strangely by the game's narrative?

Cheaply done nostalgia bait.
Nostalgia?

Yeah, Jaheira is from the other BG games.

If it was only that... everyone explained things from BG3 and even BG2, no point.

I don't know, i always killed Jaheira in any of my BG 1/2 runs. I just hate her. And i kill her in bg3 too. Profit.

I don't think she was even a huge fan hit even in 2. That was Minsc and to a lesser degree Imoen (who was more like a sister or the girl next door) Someone who is going to stick with you through thick and thin. Turns out Battle-brothers and sisters take precedent in actual battle (go figure). We're missing much of what that was in 3 and I think that's what many are saying in a way. Most starting companions are not even real love interests. They mostly just sex crazed business partners, like it or not.

Jaheira was a huge fan hit with the developers of BG2 at least, apparently her plot and her romance basically kept growing and consuming their resources and made them cancel other romances.

It kinda shows too, her Harper plot is far more involved than other companion quests.

What?

Jaheira is maintaining a besieged outpost by the skin of her teeth in a godforsaken wasteland thick with murderous monsters and consumed by unspeakable dark magic emanating from some Absolutist cult leader ensconced in some sort of fortress who controlling it all through mindflayer parasites.

And suddenly out of the blue saunters a bunch of unknown desperados, each one armed to the teeth and complete with their very own mindflayer parasite to boot, and you are expecting Jaheira to do what exactly?

Cordially invite them in for a cup of tea and slice of cake? Politely enquire if theyre round these parts for trade purposes or perhaps tourists seeing the sights? :steamhappy:

You have got to be having a laugh. Nah, Jaheira's been around and she knows what's what. Including how to stay alive in the most desparate of circumstances. She's depicted in BG3 pretty much exactly as she is in the original BG1 and BG2 games. If you'd played those games you'd see that immediately. She's just 100 years older, 100 years wiser and 100 years gnarlier.

"Born in the Tethyr region to one of the Nobles who were loyal to the King Alemander the 4th regime. Her first year was during the Tethyrian civil war that ripped the country apart and resulted in the deaths of most of the royalty and nobility. Her family was one of noble lineage that was targeted by the angry mobs of peasants. One of the servant girls took Jaheira from the castle before it fell. She fled into the forest of Tethyr and stumbled across an enclave of Druids. They took the child in to raise as their own and cared for the serving girl briefly before sending her away. Jaheira grew up a very headstrong girl; she was very militant in her beliefs that the only way to protect nature was to have an active role in the world. She became enamored with Khalid while helping to protect him from assassination by Shadow Thieves. They were wed and now travel the Coast as husband and wife.

Jaheira is a headstrong and opinionated woman; she is also very charismatic and insightful, making her a valuable friend and confidant. She has a sharp tongue and her wit can be depreciating to those for whom it is meant. Most find that her ability to make light of the serious is part of her charm. Jaheira can be some times unforgiving of her husband's faults, but does not dwell on them enough to be classified as a nag. She is very militant in her protection of nature and will not tolerate its violation."

Official website background

Also keep in mind that in bg2 she undergoes some truly horrific experiences
This gets tacked onto her Bio during bg2

" She believes the only way to protect nature is to have an active role in the world, but the cost of this dedication seems to weigh heavily on her mind these days.
She grows quiet when you ask about recent events, and while she gives the appearance of her normal, strong-willed self, there is a look of doubt in her eyes. It would seem that she has seen too many friends fall to remain unaffected. She does not like the subject, and lets it drop.

also keep in mind that in bg3 you're basically a toddle age-wise compared to her.

She was annoying in BG1 and 2, Just nuke her when you encounter her.

It's absolutely bizarre to me how easily people get offended by NPCs in video games. Jaheira acts perfectly reasonably. Just because she's mean to you doesn't mean she was wrong for being so.

Why is this piece of garbage treated so strangely by the game's narrative?

Because She and Minsk are legends. You would understand if you played the earlier games when they came out. To kids these days.. where you can just make up fake facts about everyone.. i suppose she is whatever you claim she is.
This isn't one of the earlier games. It's Baldur's Gate 3. A person judging someone on information they don't have is called a moron. A person expecting others to is called a lunatic.

I understand that you don't want to bother actually reading through the thread. It's a lot, most of it annoying and frustrating. I wouldn't expect a person to. On the other, it's absurd to someone is making things up simply because you don't know what's actually being talked about.

In short... expecting everyone you come across to be an omniscient demigod is sure to lead to disappointment. We mortals lack such an all-spanning knowledgebase... and role playing would inherently require not making any judgments on that knowledge even if we did have it.

I just found this as I was looking her interaction over. I'm surprised to find so many mixed takes. However, I need to add she is evil i'm fairly sure. See I just walked into her town and got a paladin option and she flat out says i'm not innocent. Then cause she attacked me I massacred the entire town as a paladin of the Ancients. No Oathbreak here and I killed them all. They kept adding their init and attacking so boom a whole town gone cause of her mouth and the games rules means this wasn't a evil action or I would have broken my Oath. I killed them all not just the men, but the women and children too. Or at least that is how my interaction played out.

What is with Larian studios making me massacre towns. Original Sin I ended up taking down two >//<.

I remember meeting her and she pissed me off so much that I went on a killing spree and kill everyone because the way she treated me.

Than I reloaded my quicksave and had to hold my anger.

That last light camp was the most amazing place to use the rune powder barrel lol.
