How do I know to which corpses I can speak?

I dont know how to tell. Currently I just spam f5 + f8^^

You can infinitely recast the spell after casting it once, there is 0 reason to reload if the corpse has nothing to say.

They glow if you have already cast Speak with Dead (for the free, infinite recasts).

Once you have cast Speak with Dead it remains until a long rest, and if you have it active, corpses that have something to say glow. Although it is still possible they don't want to talk to you if you are the one that turned them into a corpse....

Speak with Dead is a ritual spell which can be cast without expending a spell slot outside combat.
Corpses you kill may refrain from speaking with the caster. Circumvent this using the Disguise Self (also a ritual spell) first.
Certain attacks' or spells' killing blow effect may cause the body to be "damaged", rendering a recently killed corpse unusable for "Speak with Dead". Be mindful of how you finish your targets if you want to keep them intact for the spell to work.

I was wondering if that would work. Hadn't tried it. Because when you find out the corpse doesn't want to talk to you, you can't use Speak with Dead on it anymore.

This. It's easy to miss though as the recast goes to the very right of your hotbar.

They do actually speak to you if you use Disguise Self. :P

Cast the spell once, and speakable corpses will glow afterwards until a long rest.

When cast as a regular spell, Speak With Dead is a ritual, so it doesn't cost a spell slot. Moreover, when you cast Speak With Dead, you can recast it infinitely until a long rest, so even when using items that grant it once per long rest, you're still not at risk of "wasting" it.

Effectively, just like Speak With Animals, you should cast Speak With Dead at the start of your day; there is no good reason not to, unless you missed every free way to get it, and are solely reliant on scrolls.
