Unlike opening locks and doors I think a natural 20 is needed a lot for perception checks, to have +10 in perception you need specialisation or buffs.
I have a druid as the only wis character, might need to reroll the other druid and make him specialise in perception if that is possible (don´t think it is).
Other bit -- for what it's worth, darkvision is supposed to treat darkness as dim light, meaning that you'd get disadvantage on perception checks if you're *just* relying on Darkvision in darkness and don't have a light source. For a passive check, disadvantage woudl be treated as a -5.
