Not in game, they way whole thing is implemented. If knowing that you have 100% crit chance or seeing how enemy executes Hold Person strategy is not a good enough cues about how you are supposed to use it, then I don't know what else can help you.
I play dnd for more than 20 years, so probably played it before you was born.
Shoulda seen when hold person got multiple targets (up to 4), didn't require concentration and was much harder to resist, and being physically attacked in this state allowed the attacker to instant kill you, all in a 2nd level spell.
This IS the baby version of the Hold Person spell and I personally don't see it worth the spell slot. Sleep on the other hand...
Feels like a lot of anger over something as simple as a paralyse. It's the same as someone getting angry at losing to charm, blindness, silence poison, confusion etc and wanting that removed.
Or you can use Hold Person for all the things both of you described and both of you are having a really silly debate about the "right" way to use it.

They are turbobroken, not because of how they work (though tbf they are FANTASTIC spells in pnp 5e too), but because of the itemization. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, high 20s to low 30s spellsave DCs making them stick for basically the entire duration, always, + martials that can pump hundreds of damage per turn = yep, it's overtuned.
Ya while we at it lets nerf swords, armor, shields... lets take away everything and make this game UN FUN. LOL
