Recommend a weapon for my Paladin
I've been playing this game and so far I am enjoying it. I actually restarted my character and this time went with a Paladin. I just reached the Underdark, but I am thinking of backtracking to the Mountain path to do Lae'zel's quest and get this legendary mace I've heard about. I heard I could simply backtrack after going through the Underdark, but whatever I decide, I'm trying to to figure out which weapon I should use for my Paladin. I currently have him set up as a weapon and shield character.

I was originally going to get the Adamantine longsword, but several people told me I should instead get the splint armor and/or shield. Previously I was using the Faithbreaker warhammer, but I recently got the Phalur Alive and switched to that. I rather liked the sword in the stone aspect, plus my Paladin had a whole ritual to acquire it. However, I've heard the mace you get in the puzzle in the monastery on the mountain pass is perfect for a Paladin.

If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

I am using a Greatsword for my paladin. The mace you are talking about is used by my other Paladin (Minthara), but only because I make her use a shield. Damage output is a little underwhelming compared to the Greatsword

The holy mace from the monastery is pretty amazing and lets you have a shield. It also does things like automatically blind all undead within 10ft-ish.

That mace is great for a Paladin, especially against undead, which is the bulk of the enemies in Act 2. So you really should go pick it up. Even near the end of Act 3, I still switch over to it against undead. Against other enemies, I use the legendary trident Nyrula (sp?) which you can get at the beginning of Act 3. The recommendations for a 2-hander/no shield Pally would be very different, but like you, I run with a shield.

There's a certain sword in act 3 that allows any of your paladin smites to daze enemies

The mace in the monestary is about the best weapon you'll acquire for a sword and board paladin, for a while.

As my main is a 2 Hander I'm using Justice sword from the (false) Paladin of Tyr
No other 2H weapon is really better up to mid Act2 (or I've missed it...), sure there's the flaming sword from the Nautiloid devil, does more damage but it's not even +1

If you don't mind a 2h weapon, and rescued Halsin, then Rath will cough up a reward that lets you access a hidden vault in the druid grove (might also be possible to just loot off his corpse if you attacked the grove instead but I digress)

It contains a magical glaive that can cast Thorn Whip 1/round as a bonus action, with no daily limit, which is fun for adding a little repositioning of enemies.

I always have some backup weapons for my Paladin. Mostly I'm using two-handed weapons (including longswords). I only go for board'n sword / board'n mace if hits become too much of a problem.

There are always some nice halberds, great axes, mauls and warhammers around. At the end of act 2 one gets a nice warhammer - I used that a lot with and without shield. Spears can be interesting for their special effects (silence on hit / blind on hit) - not so much for their damage. I mostly give those to Shadowheart.

The nice thing in BG3 / 5E is that you aren't bound to certain weapon types (as weapon focus is gone). So there are no real disadvantages when switching weapons / weapon types =)

1.
You should Backtrack anyways.
Because You can in Fact do both Areas.
Just do the Underdark First all the way to the End but then dont go up from there into the Next Area. Instead go back and then go to the Mountain Pass :)

2.
And well. There is more than enough Equipment in the Game really.
So You always find stuff even if You miss other Stuff.
Hence dont worry about that.
Just use whatever You think is Best right now.
Not Joking. There is Plenty of Awesome Weapons in the Game.

If your paladin is not your teams tank, then any melee weapon thats two handed

Thats what my paladin has

That mace your talking about, I gave that to my cleric, who is my sword and shield guy, the teams tank.
My paladin is my main damage dealer.

I prefer 2 handers with martial classes that can attack twice a turn (like pallies at lv 5), but it sounds like you prefer 1 handers.

If you want a flexible weapon (like Phalar) one possible early game option is Drog Hazglin's hammer, Faithbreaker. Another is Phalar Aluve, a long sword with the unique caracteristic of being a finesse weapon (long sword usually aren't) so it's great for DEX paladins.

If you choose the 2h route, there are tons of good weapons. First the everburn blade from the Nautiloid, then 2 great +1 greatswords (Sword of Justice from Anders in risen road and Sussur Greatsword, really useful with the silence on hit) or a +1 great axe with better cleave (forgot the name) grom the goblin in the windmill area where you can save Barcus Wroot.

Later you'll get so many good weapons it's hard to list all, but you can always respec if you get something amazing that doesn't work with your build.

Well, my Paladin is a half-orc if that factors into anything?

I use Halbert of vigilance or somesuch. Weapon in act 2 which pairs amazingly with polearm master & oath of vengeance as it gives advantage on all reaction attacks.

Yes. Half-orcs do 1 extra damage dice on crit. That means the 1D12 from great axes can surpass the 2D6 from greatsword on a crit - something that doesn't happen on average with other weapons.

On crit, the damage dice doubles in BG3, so great sword = 4D6 +1D6 (half orc) = 5D6 and Great Axe is 2D12+1D12 (half orc) = 3D12

In the end of the day, you'll still pick the highest damage weapon usually, but it sure is fun to have 40ish crits by lv 3 with a +1 great axe.
