He is probably crying somewhere with nature if his body does not show up in front of the grove.
The way you described it? Surely.
Sounds like it.
I'd guess you took too long and he escaped by himself (or killing the grove causes it).
Probably for the best, doubt he'd take you killing the grove very well.
Just because a quest ends like C instead of A, B, it does not mean failed. It just means it has gotten resolved one way or another, is what that message is supposed to say.
You brought it upon you, Geist. They are all yours.
If you killed everyone in the Grove, Halsin escapes from the Goblin camp and then will confront you in your camp when you go to take a long rest. He'd be pretty pissed at how evil you are, and try to kill you.
This is not a "failure." It's an alternative route if you were going for an evil playthrough. You can still progress the story.
