Long Bow. I encountered loads of great long bows in my run, and was surprised when I was in the last part of the game trying to find new kit for Asterion that I only had his starting hand crossbow and a single enchanted one I think I found on a dead gnome somewhere or whatever that shot magic missiles instead of arrows (which was great, because almost nothing resists force, but slim pickings)

Not a Hand Crossbow, TWO Hand Crossbows hands down if you're stealthy beforehand.

Good Longbows are non existent until Act 3. You can buy a pretty badass +2 one with an effect that lowers crit threshold by 1 and doubles your proficiency bonus as long as you don't have disadvantage from a Lower City vendor but prior to that the best one is Act 1 Jolt Shooter and it sucks.

Heavy Crossbow is the best Act 1 ranged weapon type. You can get a +1 that has advantage against monsters and also a +1 that Banes the target if they fail a CHA save.

There are some decent short bows in Act 2. 1d6 base damage sucks though, its the same as a hand crossbow but with 20% more range.

Late Act 2 you get what I think is the best hand crossbow in the game. Considering that, Ranger/Fighter to at least 5 and then Thief to at least 3 is one of the strongest ranged builds in the game. Dex gloves and Sharpshooter and you can get 4 attacks by character level 8. 5 on round one if you go Gloomstalker.

The two longbows I mainly used were in Act 1 and Act 2 iirc. One generated lightning charges, which paired with an accessory that healed when lightning charges were gained. The second had a chance to restore spell slots on a critical. I did get a legendary one in act 3 that I swapped to (and also had the devil's crossbow, craftable hellfire crossbow, and the legendary crossbow which are probably the three best ones in the game imo but the first is act 2 and the others are act 3)

Should I equip the gloves that give bonus stat to longbow and shortbow? Forgot the gloves, it's in act 1
2 hand crossbow is awesome ( granted im still in act 1 tho ...)

dual wielding short swords/hand crossbows just doesn't compare to anything else, especially as thief. 3 whole attacks per turn, 4 when you get multiattack from a lvl 5 class

lvl 2 fighter has action surge for one extra attack, gloomstalker for a free attack turn 1
