Swashbuckler - Cloak and sword type
Could someone point me to a build to make a swashbuckler in the "cloak and sword" style, inspired by characters like Zorro or Three Musketeers. Not that swash rogue, like Pirate, but something more D'Artagnan

Fighter, pick duelist fighting style, use a rapier, battle master or champion (battlemaster is far superior)

As for itemization, you have a bunch of options.

addendum, take a couple levels in rogue too, bare minimum 2 for that cunning action, its a game changer

Sadly there is no swashbuckler subclass for rogue.

I also think fighter battlemaster is the way.
You get some nice maneuvers - like riposte, disarm, trip etc.

That means you miss the third attack. Deffff not worth. If you really wanna dash as a BA just use boots of speed.

cunning action isnt just dashes mate, let alone the expertise you get and sneak attacks

I would suggest a dex based Battlemaster fighter build, with some rogue thrown in... level 8 fighter battlemaster, level 4 rogue thief.

Dex at 16 to start, use 2 feats to bump that to 20. use a 3rd to get a feature feat... like two weapon fighting, or something useful like that. Last feat (you get an extra at fighter 6) is really up for grabs... better con maybe, or charisma never hurts... or a utility feat, such as sharpshooter... or maybe sentinel?

Lots of choices, but disarming people left and right, getting an extra bonus action per round, and being able to use it to dash, or disengage, or hide... all with a fighter's finesse dps.

(edit)A Fighter thief can be unstoppable, mobility-wise, with a fighter's danger, and a rogue's escape options.

Alternatively... swords bard.

If its not already obvious, I just would like to point out that you can totally build a fighter based off Dex as your primary score, you just need to use finesse weapons. You can dump Str in this case. Dualist seems obvious here, but battlemaster is something to consider. Getting the trip, disarm, etc type actions in battle is quite swashbucklery to me. Definitely should consider using a shield, I wish they had bucklers in game for the visual anyway. Medium Armor and if you can the feat medium armor master gets you up to +3 dex bonus on AC and removes the disadvantage on stealth. Defensive Dualist is an option later in game maybe. It allows you to add your proficiency bonus to AC as a reaction, But remember you only get one reaction per turn so not as great as you think. Probably best focusing on getting your ability scores up. Rather than a fighter build you can consider a ranger or even multiclass w/ theif as well. Shame you can't have a parrot as your animal companion but you can imagine.

Cunning action disengage is kinda rendered obsolete by click heels
cunning action hide is nice, sure, but eh, not worth the 2 levels.

This. If bards had a hurdy gurdy, you'd be all set.
x_equals_speed 27 aug, 2023 @ 14:42
I reckon rogue/thief

There's a cloak in the game that means whenever you disengage you create a cloud of obscuring smoke, which seems the only real fit for cloak and sword fighting. Thief makes disengaging a bonus action and gives you an extra bonus action. Also if you can be immune to blindness (various items do that) being in the cloud will give you advantage on your attack which will trigger sneak attack damage.

If you dual wield, you can attack 3 times and yes there are feats and items which will allow you to dual wield finesse swords and get your atk and dmg bonus from dex in your off hand attacks. In this case you put your strongest weapon in the off hand because you get two per turn as a rogue.. But IMO dual wielding is not what I think of as swashbucklery. If I were doing a rogue multiclass / I would lean toward Bard / Assassin or Ranger / Assassin.

But I honestly Intend to build something similar for a run through, and I plan to do battlemaster figher for at least six levels. But I will wait until variant human is available either directly from Larian, or when I feel the game is stable enough to start modding.
mutantspicy 27 aug, 2023 @ 15:11
Sounds crazy. But a 6 Bard/6 Shadow Monk might get you to that Antonio Banderas place you are looking for. Monk will get you some sneak and defense with style, and the bard will get you that sharp tongue with vicious mockery. It will be tricky to balance Dex/Chr/Wis but you can make your bard a sword bard and less reliant on chr based spells.
Juggernaut 27 aug, 2023 @ 15:17
If I am honest, College of Blades Bard seems like a fairly close choice, though for the little bit i played so far it seems less swashbucklery, and more fencer
