...um... I did.
I only came back after I had spoken to Elminster, and then did the creche... a bit of a completionist urge in me.
Technically the mountain pass is also act 2... act 2 just doesnt have as hard a wall behind as you might think.
At first I just teleported back to sell stuff to a vendor i KNEW was at max... but then I figured I'd do the other way, get the loot/exp. Well worth doing both.
That's a negative.
You can start act 2 and then go back and do mountain pass\creche without issue.
I'd assume the same is true of the underdark but haven't done it that way personally.
